Anyone able to get Wine to run the latest Windows build of the client? I've not had problems with it until they added this damnable new login screen. I'm using a Gentoo x86_64 build of 0.9.8 with OpenGL and all the trimmings. I've been able to use that for the last six months to a year in Second Life no problem. As of the new login screen, I just crash before I can log in. If possible, is there a config option to turn the thing off?

I haven't found a config option but it is possible to hack the skins/xui/en-us/panel_login.xml file to remove the web stuff. That makes it work for me. Take a copy and do it carefully I've posted more detailed information here - ignore the mac-specific filename /164/4b/146782/1.html#post1325282

I'm having a hard time understanding why you would run SecondLife in WINE?

From: Valen Leinhardt I'm having a hard time understanding why you would run SecondLife in WINE? It generally works far better than the native Linux client. This is only just beginning to change.

... except for the alpha channel bug ... For a girl, that was a reason to only use the windows client, way back when, and then as the linux client got better, switch to the (then VERY limited) linux native client. The Black Legs / Full Length White Undies / Transparent Skins Issues drove me away; and since I don't script, and never had sound on anyhow, the rest was OK in the native client. Depends what you want, I guess

Wine gives me much better resolutions, though it didn't have as good sound as the new native Linux builds. The Linux client was strewn with bugs and missing features back when I first made the switch over to Wine. Seeing it now, it's still not a fully-featured item... but it's definitely worth using.

From: Precillia Shilton is there a way to run SL on wine with an ATi Radeon x850 Pro agp video card ? I'm running the native client on SuSE 10.1 with the latest ATi drivers installed. I have no problems whatsoever. I might try experimenting with wine and post you my findings. Keep in mind that you do need to have OpenGL or XGL working properly before even attempting to run graphical programs succesfully in wine.
