Try getting all the ALSA stuff via your package manager, and use it to play around with the audio settings. That helped me sort out a number of audio problems when I first started using an Audigy on Ubuntu 8. Even SLVoice seems to work (more or less).

I'm also on Ubuntu 8.04 and when I first tried running SL, I had the same problem with streaming audio. Then I turned off visual effects (go to System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects and select "None" . Everything's fine now. Might want to go back to using your onboard sound and try that. SL is probably getting confused with the multiple sound devices... if you're going to continue to use the Audigy you should probably disable onboard sound in the BIOS.

If you're using Pulse Audio, just uncomment: export LL_BAD_OSS=x and export LL_BAD_ALSA=x in your "secondlife" startup script. That works fine for me.
