Did anybody manage to get ALSA sound working?

I'd like to not run esd/pulseadio, but every time I try to run SL with ALSA (when preventing it from using OSS), it freezes after login, at/after LLCircuit::addCircuitData. I had the same thing happen in all recent versions (1.12 upto 1.15.0.2)

What am I missing? Is ALSA not implemented in SL?

My system is Debian Unstable,
kernel: linux-image-2.6.18-4-k7
alsa version: 1.0.13-5
sound card is onboard nForce2, using snd_intel8x0

alsa does kinda work for me with sl, so it is definitely in there :-) It doesn't work very well for me though, because with alsa the sound is always a bit crackly or slowed down.... while i got no problems with other alsa apps...

I get the same problem. If I disable OSS and EsD SL gets hung up loading . OSS is really stutttery and choppy and EsD is silent. Whats weird is that it worked perfectly fo a few days then started sounding awful.

ESD works but has latency issues for me, ALSA works but is prone to crashing often, OSS works beautifully but the AOSS wrapper is crackly and mostly unusable. Straight up OSS is clean and latency free but it hogs the audio device while in use. I remember someone used an ESD replacement somewhere else and ended up getting it to work on ARTS (lol).
