Window Creation Error on FC6

I hav a Linux laptop that has the latest FC6 updates and when running secondlife, the program fails with a "Window Creation Error" dialog box. This is not the case on a similar FC6 desktop without all the FC6 updates.

Can someone let me know if there might be a workaround. Here are the last few lines from secondlife just before the "Window Creation Error"

that output usually appears when it is trying to open a "do you want to submit a crash report" dialog. I am running SL atm on a FC6 machine so it should be working fine. What video card are you using and have you checked to make sure direct rendering is enabled and working?

direct rendering?
04-23-2007 15:19
This is a Dell Inspiron 9400 with the 1920x1200 super wide screen and works with all other common FC6 programs. I would have to ask, "how do I set direct rendering for SL when it wont initialize?".

CODE
$ glxinfo | grep direct

should say "direct rendering: yes"

it looks like it is having trouble initializing the rendering, hence the window not appearing.

if you just run glxinfo with no arguments theres another part near the top that states your drivers
ie
CODE

OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 6600 GT/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
OpenGL version string: 2.1.0 NVIDIA 97.55

it might help us help you

glxinfo
04-25-2007 07:26
If I do a glxinfo, I get the following

[ckrinke@dellx SecondLife_i686_1_14_0_1]$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_GLXCreateContext)
Serial number of failed request: 16
Current serial number in output stream: 17
[ckrinke@dellx SecondLife_i686_1_14_0_1]$

My assumption is that some library or package is probably not installed on this laptop thereby allowing my FC6 desktop to run secondlife and my laptop to not run secondlife. Before I start adding packages indiscrimately with yum, could I ask for a bit more knowledge of what is going on please?

It likely doesnt have the drivers for the video card installed.
CODE

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver

that will print the drivers listed in the xorg config. Mine returns:

CODE
13:06:31 [Adria.sakkaku]~ $ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver
Driver "kbd"
Driver "nvidia"

if your lists vga or nv it is likely not using an accelerated driver and you will need to install them.

if you want you can also post the lspci and it will list the devices and will hopefully solve the issue with just one command.

CODE
13:06:45 [Adria.sakkaku]~ $ /sbin/lspci

Here is the lspci for this Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. I am hopeful there may be a simple change to allow me to run secondlife on it.

there is your video card, can you post your xorg config? The drivers for the intel video chips are included with xorg so it is likely something within the xorg config.

crap my bad, my lappy shows up with that card :\

CODE

source: http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon

//install the ati driver
# yum install kmod-fglrx

//shut down X
# /sbin/init 3

//enable the driver
# ati-fglrx-config-display enable

//then restart X
# /sbin/init 5

I dont own any ati cards so I dont know if the above will work, I would make a backup of /etc/X11/xorg.conf before you proceed so that you can roll back in the event of problems.

Shut off Composite if ATI and Xfree_DRI not fiound
04-30-2007 18:30
Add the following to the end of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file if you're trying to use an ATI-based video card:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "0"
EndSection

I believe that you'll be surprised.

Same Problem with Direct Rendering on Fedora Core 6
05-04-2007 18:15
Hi, I have a similar problem but a different graphics card.

Here are the diagnostics for my machine when I run cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver

Driver "kbd"
Driver "trident"

The graphics card I have is Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/i1

do I need simply a new graphics card, or can I run second life with direct rendering?

the system requirements need a 2 generation 256 bit gpu by NVIDIA or ATI with atleast 64mb of ram

your card is a 64 bit gpu with most likley 16 mb of ram, honestly those havent been all that usefull for anything 3d since the mid 90's

you can grab a middle of the road nvidia geforce 5-6 series for practcally nothing, practcally anywhere

it would probally be faster in your 2d enviroment also

nvidia's and SL seem to like eachother ... theres been a history of weirdness with ati, mainly becuase they just make weird software (ATI that is, they just dont wanna play ball with open GL, why ? who knows)
