Forum Members -

I would like to be able to play SL on my ATI Mobility 7500 based laptop. I do have direct rendering enabled and it seems to be working fine. A glxinfo | grep render indicated that direct rendering is enabled. DRI is provided by the open source 'radeon' driver. When I try to start the game I get the errors that are listed below. From reading the forum it seems that quite a few people are having similar issues, but after trying to implement some of the suggestions that have worked for others I am still getting the same results. So I guess that my question boils down to this, is there a way to get SL working in linux on Mobility 7500 video card? Will I have better results if I use Wine?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions that you may have.
Rainmak

Look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
or /etc/X11/XF86Config

for the line DefaultDepth and make sure it is set to 24 (24 bit = 32 bit in some kind of confusing way.. perhaps someone could explain this to me?).. If it is set lower, it will not work.

Theora -

I just checked my Xorg.conf file and my depth is currently set to 24. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
James

How did you uncompress the file? use tar xzf on the command line rather than automated tools, as lots of people have had trouble with the file not having all directories correctly populated when auto-uncompressing.

Theora -

Yes I downloaded the tarball, and then expanded it using tar -zxvf. I have actually tried deleting my ~/secondlife directory and re-expanding the tarball, but stil get the same error.

Anything else? I'm pretty sure it is a problem with the X.org config or driver, I just can't figure out what it is.

Thanks,
James

What does xdpyinfo report for screen#0?
For me it's something like:
screen #0:
print screen: no
dimensions: 1600x1200 pixels (363x272 millimeters)
resolution: 112x112 dots per inch
depths (7): 24, 1, 4, 8, 15, 16, 32
root window id: 0x116
depth of root window: 24 planes
number of colormaps: minimum 1, maximum 1
default colormap: 0x20
default number of colormap cells: 256
preallocated pixels: black 0, white 16777215
options: backing-store NO, save-unders NO
largest cursor: 64x64
current input event mask: 0xfa4031

Of course the most important bit of info right now is "depth of root window"

Also, are you 100% sure OpenGL is working properly: do other 3D accelerated games work OK? What fps do you get with glxgears? Could we have a bit more of the output of the failed startup?

Unsupported, maybe :(
03-12-2006 08:00
It seems like ATI's mobility 7500 is unsupported:

http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=System+Requirements

It's not very nice though that this is stated only in the tiki and not the main system requirements page:

http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php

Shouldn't this two resources be unified?
If someone manages to make it work, please post (of course!)

:)

Here in the forums, I've read of people running SL on Linux in hardware that is supposedly unsupported (for the windows version at least)

furahivszuri Zeluco -

My xdpyinfo shows that my depth of root window is set to 16. How can I change this? Is it a setting in my Xorg.conf file? My xdpyinfo is below:

screen #0:
dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (292x212 millimeters)
resolution: 89x92 dots per inch
depths (7): 16, 1, 4, 8, 15, 24, 32

works in windows

All -

Thanks for all of your help so far. I just wanted to post another message saying that the game does run in windows on the same laptop. I'm not really sure if that means anything though.

Thank for everything,
James

post your xorg.conf file, and I will try to say if I can see something wrong with it. Here is the relevant excerpt from mine:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "geforce"
Monitor "monitor"
DefaultDepth 24

# Subsection "Display"
# Depth 8
# Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
# ViewPort 0 0
# EndSubsection
# Subsection "Display"
# Depth 16
# Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
# ViewPort 0 0
# EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
EndSection

You see I have commented out every depth except for 24. This is not really necessary, but it means that if it cannot start at depth 24, it fails instead of trying 16 etc.

Also I am using an nvidia card and I know that ATI and linux is often more problematic, but I am sure you will get there eventually.

Could I also point out that the above error message is exactly the same as the one that people are getting who have not uncompressed the directory properly. Do you have read/write permissions to the full secondlife directory? Did you uncompress the file with tar xzf as the same user (not root) that you are using to try to run the program?
