Does Linden Research have any exit strategy whatsoever for vivox? Since they can't open the source to that, it seems rather odd they would pick that as the backend for voice if they didn't feel that it was short term and something that was going to b fixed...

So is there any work being done to replace vivox in SL so we have a 100% free viewer again? This is very important as if the question is "no," many Linux distributions that support freedom, such as Debian, are unlikely to include SL in their distribution.

Dont think anything can be expected from linden labs when it comes to their linux viewer or slvoice.

It's not exactly "their" viewer since they open sourced it, though... or OMVViewer wouldn't exist and there wouldn't be outside developers from the free software community working on the upstream SLViewer...

hope they don't ... the main thing vivox provides is the infrastructure for -I don`t know, wikipedia maybe does - 15 000 000 accounts and all the connections when in world.

What is needed is that vivox opens their market to connections made through open source software and open protocols. I don't see the point in not doing so. Imagine every service you used in the internet would force you to install their own propriarity software with their own propriarity protocols ... Alice: "no, i can't send you an email, the computer I'm sitting at has no fooClient for barMail installed." Bob: "I'm at FOOmail, they use a completely different client, so we can't mail anyways. Let's stay with tin can telephone.".
For having an open source voice client there is a jira: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-9258
