While the lack of file uploading has been mentioned before, I wasn't able to find any mention of the other issues I am having.

I wanted to put a screenshot of my avatar and a photo of myself in my profile, but all methods I tried failed.

All the file upload menu entries just do nothing.

The snapshot to disk menu entry made my avatar do some wierd photo taking motion with his hands, but I was unable to find any new texture in my inventory, or any new image file on my hard drive.

The snapshot menu entry shows a complex looking dialog, but then crashes the client a second later. This happened consistantly. I never got much of a chance to read the complex looking dialog.

In desperation, I tried out the final screen image that is left when you log out. I was never able to get anything like a reliable pose, and the lack of upload ability means I can't do anything with it anyway.

Looks like my only option is grab a screenshot of the window using gimp, and find a friendly Windows user I can email images to, who will upload them, meet me in world, then pass the resulting textures to me.

There has to be a better way.

There is.. It's called screen capture!

Use ksnapshot or Gimp to do it!

SL is broken in oh so many ways for Linux at the moment, but those of us who love it are able to (almost) overlook these flaws... and hope that Icculus is going to be releasing something soon!

Edit: oh saw you already were doing this...

AFAIK, you can save a snapshot as a texture in the game (this worked for me) at a cost of 10L$.. You have to delete lib/libjpeg.so from your SL dir first to avoid the crashes!

Wine works OK with SL for uploading..

If you delete the lib/libjpeg.so that's in the Second Life directory, you may (depending on your system library) find that snapshots start working, in which case you can upload your snapshot as a texture fine.
