Hi... not a windows fan and I would like to access SL with Linux. I am familiar with RH Linux, so I can use CentOS. Has anyone used CentOS with an SL Viewer? What is the most stable SL viewer out there for Linux?

I have not been able to find an SL viewer for Linux that does not complain or which is not very slow comparative to the Windows viewer.

Would appreciate any help or assistance.

What is your opinoion of the most stable SL Viwer Linux Distro combo?

Regards.

Raven.

None that I'm aware of. I'm using the Beta and the only issue I've had has been the audio issues that most others are experiencing. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic and my viewer actually runs smoother than it did on Win 7 64 bit. /shrugs

"complain"? how so, about what? and slower than windows? i find that hard to believe, on my computers every single openGL app, including SL, runs at about 110% of the performance of the comparable windows versions...

I've had SL on a few comps over the years, with various versions of Windows AND Linux on the same machines. In EVERY case, in Linux, SL and everything else runs faster on the same hardware. Always, without exception!

Make sure you have the proper video drivers installed in any Linux you use. Otherwise it WILL run slow.

the SL client will 'complain' about your graphic card, if you have:
- either an old card (ATI9250)
- or a laptop graphic break (intel)
- or you did not install OpenGL accelleration

I use Suse 11.1 and have no problem with the viewer downloaded from secondlife.com. I've tried the SnowGlobe one, but it looks about the same as the main one.

The Emerald viewer did crash pretty hard after only a minute or so.

I have audio and everything. No complaints!

I was going to post some time ago, for those who have audio problems running Ubuntu/Kubuntu 9.10. I simply remove pulseaudio, and with a 32 bit install of Kubuntu, I can start running SL right away, without any other adjustments, it will happily use Openal (at least seems that way on my Kubuntu 32 bit install).

In the case of 64 bit Kubuntu/Ubuntu 9.10, it can't use Openal, so, Openal needs to be stopped from loading in the startup script (comment in the line - 'export LL_BAD_OPENAL_DRIVER=x'), doing this also causes the SL viewer to lock your audio device for exclusive control (if firefox or anything else open is using audio at that time, SL will start with no sounds), so......to fix that finally install 'esound', once installed type 'esd' in terminal (or Konsole) and start the viewer, voice will also work, I had no problems, and this solution seems to me a lot easier and cleaner, sometimes esd will need to be restarted (but seems to play well with SL viewer, and will work for hours).
