I've only recently realized that this was a firstlook problem....
Sometimes particles simply do not show up on the firstlook client. I went back with the non-firstlook client and saw them, so that was the problem.
I don't know if this is a firstlook problem, or a "firstlook on Linux problem."
I *do* know that I"m getting frame rates that are up to 3x higher using the firstlook client...! IN many places my Radeon 9250 using the open source drivers is giving me 20-30fps with the firstlook client, whereas I'd only have 10fps with the standard client. I miss the particles (and I also suffer from the "avatar not moving when prim he is sitting on moved" bug), but the fps is so much higher that I'm routinely using firstlook at the moment.

particles setting?

I compared this myself, and there WERE less visible particle on my First Look Client, too.
I checked the settings - particles were set to (default value) 1024, and on the Aölpha Client 4096. When I set the value up on the first look client, I got the same particle visibility as on the alpha client.
Maybe that is what you are seeing?

I had this today, too, after TPing back to my home. It seems a "now and then" kind of bug
