I'm fairly new to ubuntu, and I would like to install Second Life on it. How do I do this? It is saved as a .tar.gz file and I do not know how to execute this ( I am used to running a simple .exe in windows.) and help would be appreciated!

You have downloaded a zip file. Not called zip though, same thing.
You need to unpack it, by clicking it , it might open. Or double-clicking.

Then it should unpack. (It has to unpack somewhere, you cannot just open the zip and run it) It's now installed. Go to where it unpacked and look inside. You will see a file called secondlife, click on that one.

You are up up and away....
