Inspiron 9300/PentiumM2.o/2GBmemory/nvidia geforce go 6800 256mb video card/Latest driver that I am aware of (through Automatix) 1.0-9755/Running Kubuntu 7.04, downloaded and installed 2 days ago
I worked around the necessary xorg.conf configuration Sunday, and I was able to get 1.18.0.6 working - I was able to login, and provided I didn't resize the window, I had very little trouble. I logged out Sunday night, all seemed ok
Trying to login Monday.........20 times I login I get to the point of "Connecting to Region....." the viewer freezes and I can do nothing but look at the login pic until I kill the procesess. I was able to get in eventually. I was told it looked as though I had I kept logging and out on other Friends list....so something has me and the viewer freezes.
Tonight I'm having the same issue - I get to "Connecting to Region........" and everything freezes
Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

My problem is the same. I get it when the sound system won't comply, Amarok running, Skype. I've usually had Amarok running recently. Turn them off, try again. Restart SL. Oh yeah. More than once, I check what's running... and ctl-alt-bksp it.

This has been happening to me for so long that I have become used to it!

EEk.! That ^ means I am becoming a Windows user - call the Doc.!!!
I have become used to having to reboot to log back in if I log out. I am assuming some resource is being allocated and not released again - the above comment on the sound system is interesting, as I hadn't looked at that (was assuming it was a video driver issue).

I've received a "did not receive region handshake" type error repeatedly when trying to connect from a firewalled network -- the same laptop connects just fine from a home network, so I blame the firewall. It had nothing to do with the machine or SL, in my case.

Seems like I can login about 1 in 10 times
Its not a firewall issue - when plugged directly into the modem, I get the very same performance.
The program was hanging reliably at the same place each time in the messages scrolling through the terminal....
Rebooting does seem to help, I've been able to login twice after a hardware reboot
Now it goes for a few messages more and hangs at a new place in the login
Once I let it go and after 5 minutes actually logged in to somewhere, though not SL proper - I couldn't see anything or tp anywhere or communicate with anyone, but I had access to the viewer.
Anyone have any resources on information gathering for bug reporting? I'm not a coder or anything, but I could use more information on why this is happening and what I can do

Heya, IF it is a sound related hang (which is possible), you could try: Change the "secondlife" startup file so the software only looks for ESD audio. Type "artsdsp esd -terminate" - Which runs esd but makes it serve all the audio to arts, KDE's own sound system, and the -terminate tells esd to quit when secondlife is finished running. Then just run secondlife. If it works for you just write a little script file that does this for you each time. Since I started doing this for the 1.18 client the whole thing seems more stable (not perfect by a long shot), but certainly more stable including logins. Hope this helps!

ayecaramba That did the trick. I still have no sound, but this chipset has always been uncooperative on that end, no matter the distro, and its not surprising the issue was sound. +20 overall for you, Fluf

Yes...this works but I get no sound whatsoever after from SL, and I've not been able to work around that yet.
