ATI have released yet another update to its recently redeveloped FGLRX driver. It is still to be considered --> unstable and should not be used on a stable system <-- However it contains bug fixes and improvements to its previous 8.41.7 release.
I would be greatfull if you can post your experiences with it including any bugs you might find and include your distribution and card info when posting.
-- UPDATED --
This includes re enabling support for older cards which had limited in the previous release.

I'm on an HP Pavilion dv 8000 with an ATI Radeon XPress 200M running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) and the new fglrx 8.42.3. I have composite and aiglx working with Compiz, videos, Google Earth, and SL. I have to run Google Earth and SL in fullscreen on one side of the cube, or I get a nasty flicker, otherwise my framerate in SL did jump about 10 fps from the Mesa OpenGL I was running. My only probs so far are lack of suspend support, which I blame on Gutsy, and the new driver does seem to freeze my entire box a few times a day, ESPECIALLY if it goes to the screensaver. You can see what I went through starting here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3617710#post3617710

There are still quite a few bugs to iron out including video tearing and screen corruption while running opengl applications. There are a few things you can try to lesson the impact of the system freeze on the computer included in the readme distributed with the second life software. It won't fix the lockups but atleast you can try an umount/reboot without trashing the drive.
