The new client does the following when I try to start it:

2006-03-21T00:54:43Z INFO: remove_marker_file()

I'm on Gentoo, 1.7GHz mobile P4, ATI Mobile Radeon M7 (7500). This is a clean install. It seems to run, initializes GL and opens a window, but then immediately exits.

I'm on Gentoo (today's pull of the portage tree and updates), Sempron in 64-bit mode, and an NVidia Geforce 6600. I don't see that. Can you check on an NVidia card?

Not unless you have QFP soldering equipment around that you want to loan me.

(I'm on a laptop, hence the "mobile";).

dunno if this helps, but check your settings.ini file for RenderUserFarClip line...my settings.ini has RenderUseFarClip...that's Use, not User...gentoo/nvidia

I don't appear to have a settings.ini file. In fact, the directory it's supposed to be in is nowhere to be found, either.

What did you use to decompress it?

Use tar, GUIs may simply decide not to create empty folders, and the program can't deal with that.

tar -xjf SecondLife... etc etc etc

That's how I extracted it.

The settings file should be (from the root of where you extracted SL):

./SecondLife_1_9_0_17/SecondLife/user_settings/settings.ini

If this folder does not exist, your archive might be corrupted, but I doubt that, since bzip would've complained by then ...

If nothing works, I'd suggest re-untarring it and starting over with a fresh install.

Well, the folder exists, but the file doesn't.

I was able to make the warning about "RenderUserFarClip" go away by putting a line into the config file, but it still doesn't allow me to start the program.

tar -xjf SecondLife... etc etc etc

That's how I extracted it.

tar -jxvf SecondLife_1_9_0_17.tar.bz2
would be the easyest way to do It I think.
(-j for BZip2, and -z for GZip

Edit:
Err lol did not se you had a j in the lol.
So used to have the compressor flag first sorry.
But -v is good to have also :D

The 'v' flag just makes it a lot noisier. It doesn't effect the way it operates.

I am having exactly the same problem. The file settings.ini doesn't exist either.

Could anybody post his or her user_settings files? That seemed to solve the problem for ninjafooNg.

By the way, just like Solar Angel, I am trying to run SecondLife from a laptop (1.7GHz mobile P4, too, as it happens).

my files in SecondLife_1_9_0_17/SecondLife/user_settings are crash_settings.ini & settings.ini
in settings.ini, all the BusyModeResponse stuff before CameraPosOnLogout should be on one line

Interesting, sounds like we have similar hardware.

Conflict with the DRI drivers maybe?

Incidentally, running the windows client under Wine works fine (although very slowly).
