to expand on that, i tend to prefer listening to my own music on XMMS (yes, i know it's old ) while i'm in SL, and whenever I sign in, it basically finishes the song it's playing then i get an error message saying the soundcard is in use. If i use amarok to play MP3's, it works fine - so i know some will suggest playing music on amarok, but I like XMMS and would prefer to use that. And i also have all the audio muted and all streaming music disabled as well.

Muting the audio will not stop the sound card being grabbed. Only way to stop the viewer grabing the audio is to enable the LL_BAD_XX audio lines in the startup script OR get your system using ALSA or ESD so you can share the sound card.i bet you are currently on OSS so only one app can access the sound card at once (via /dev/dsp)
