I have succesfully downloaded Second Life and I can run it, but it runs unusably slow. The lag is awful if i try to move forward or backwards, however moving the camera around seems to work fine. I tried turning the effects down to minimum and still nothing! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Well, I don't really know, but perhaps:
-speed of your internet connection? -system RAM? How much do you have? -Graphics card dedicated RAM? |

Also, make sure your display is in 24-bit mode and not 16-bit.

Most likely you are using the free drivers that are installed by default which use mesa. This is slower and most likely the cause of your problems. If you have an ati or nvidia guide try following the guide here to install the proprietary drivers. But to diagnose fully please post your hardware specs here.
Guide to proprietary driver installation found here http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty#Graphics_Card |
