No shiny since fl59036

Where has my shiny gone. Works in FL 59036 but not in any viewer since.
I have Kubuntu linux with Nvidia 5700 card.
I have to use the 59036 version to work with anything shiny.

Can I turn it on somewhere else ( yes it's switched on in prefs) tried vbo (whatever that does.)
What am I missing here. No other threads or mentions of it.
Must be me

edit: Just went and checked through 5 versions and only FL 59036 has shiny.
I like shiny, where is it?
