Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 w/ working voice?

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64, which means pulseaudio, and have a USB headset.

Why doesn't SL just work out of the box with a bog-standard config like this?

Ignoring that question for a moment, what do I need to do to make this work?

PulseAudio is being presented as a plug-in replacement for Esound. Unfortunately the Esound module in PA is a piece of crap that doesn't do what esound does.

You need to install esound (and make sure it is active).

Also, you need to keep PA. Both of them together is what it takes to get voice in sl.
