I'm running 8.10 ubuntu - am tempted to go on up to 9.04 but won't if it knocks SL out. (BTW, also doing some testing of opensimulator using the linux sl client to access that)

As far as I can tell 9.04 is probably the best Ubuntu version I've used, overall, and as for running SL, it runs better than 8.10 for me. I still had that terrible pulseaudio crash, but with jaunty, I was able to comment (disable) in the SL startup script, ESD, OSS, and Openal (Openal as I run 64 bit Ubuntu), doing this there is a slight 1 second delay for me, in all viewer sounds, but, I have a usable viewer that can run for literally hours with no problems and with working voice, so the delay for me is a compromise I'll take over no sounds and no voice.
This is just my experience and maybe you should wait for others to post before going for 9.04, lol, good luck in any case ![]() |

Got to agree with Peace here. 9.04 seems pretty solid in every area.
Been running Jaunty since beta3. Go ahead.. Make your day! _____________________

Echoing the sentiment here. Running 9.04 Jaunty here, and having no SL issues whatsoever - at least, none that could be blamed on the OS or the viewer

Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty - FINALLY I can play SL! 8.10 sucked with SL for me. But 9.04 is GREAT.
The only problem i had is that the default boot kernel crashed gloriously in a sparkle of mixed up, pixelated and smeared graphics, so I had use the Startup Manager to fix that so i am running the: "2.6.27-9-generic" kernel. _____________________

I've run Ubuntu systems before but never considered running Secondlife with it, until now. I have to say, 9.04 was a speedy install and other than updating my graphics driver it's been smooth as silk. From start to finish (from formatting to running SL) was approximately 30mins. What truly amazes me is not only the ease in setting it up, but how smooth SL runs. In the past I've built fast Windows systems with the latest hardware configurations but was never truly happy with the SL experience on them. The box I'm running 9.04 on was put together with spare parts and is undoubtedly my favorite system for running SL on now.
Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton running at 1.83ghz can be OC'd via bios to 2.2ghz 2gb ddr400 ram onboard nVidia 10/100 ethernet GeForce 7300GT AGP Video Card 512mb ram 20gb Western Digital hard drive As you can see, that's not exactly anyone's first choice for a computer by today's standards, but with 9.04 it absolutley rocks for SL and is affordable for anyone. I haven't noted any issues running the SL client so far, although there could be some I haven't discovered. One thing I did notice about 9.04 was that package installation from the net is much faster when doing updates. I'm really impressed overall. |

Brianna: You may have to bootup with some boot options.
In the past I had to use noapic, noacpi and/or another I can't remember, as boot options to boot the graphics properly. Those can be put into the /boot/menu.1st file too. It's been a while, 7.04? I can't remember now. good luck. _____________________

Is there a boot options manager i can install from Synaptic Package Manger? Would a clean reinstall make a difference as opposed to just "updating" to 9.04? _____________________

If a program plays up, especially after some upgrade, try renaming the dot folder/file of the program (if it has one) in your Home directory. These hold user settings and prefs.
Sometimes setting don't play nice to a new version. I have done this to the KDE and Gnome folders too when things have gone awry. _____________________

It works well... but not with some ATI cards
05-14-2009 08:47
I have 9.04 on my netbook and it walks SL just fine once I set EXPORT LL_GL_NOEXT on - that appears to be necessary for the Intel graphics currently. No current netbook can be said to "run" SL - that may change when netbooks using the NVidia Ion platform become available. My desktop Linux system with an NVidia 7600GS also works very nicely with Jaunty.
On the other hand, my bigger laptop has a Radeon XPress 200M video card, and ATI dropped support of older video cards (anything older than the HD2000 series) in their latest driver... and the new driver is the only one with support for the version of X.org in Jaunty so you can't just use the older one. ATI suggests using the open source driver but SL doesn't work with that, so I'm stuck with 8.10 on the laptop until somebody flinches in this game of driver chicken. |

I *did* try an in-place upgrade from Intrepid to Jaunty, but I was pretty sure I would run into problems since I had hacked Jaunty's ALSA and Pulseaudio into my Intrepid install. Sure enough, things started getting pretty squirrelly after the upgrade, so I just backed up /home, wiped, and reinstalled. _____________________

I just yesterday, finished upgrading one of my other machines from Intrepid to Jaunty.
1865 packages, 21 hours and 1 reboot later and it's as good as new, just like I left it. So it went well, no need for a re-install. Last night I ran the upgrade on my little Ubuntu-server machine. It's now running fine too. But I have to reinstall on my wifes Acer laptop because it's running 7.10 and, I believe, you can't leapfrog a version. But it's also just one partition. Drats. So, as far as mine went, it seems ok and encouraged to do a live upgrade. _____________________

Are you referring only to the drivers in the Ubuntu repositories, or did you try ATI's website as well? There's a note that the XPress 200M is in the legacy driver, but the legacy driver is listed as supporting X.org 7.4. fglrx from the Jaunty repositories failed to load for me. I'll let you know if the legacy driver from amd.com fails to work. Edit Legacy driver fails with "Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version default:v2:x86_64:lib32::none:2.6.28-12-generic; make sure that the version is being correctly set by --iscurrentdistro". If I give the command to extract only and run "check.sh" I get "Architecture: x86_64 (64-bit); X Server: unable to detect". So maybe Shirley is right, or maybe the installer just doesn't recognize Ubuntu as using 7.4 and we can somehow force that? |

so I just backed up /home, wiped, and reinstalled. For future installs, do custom partitioning and put /home on it's own partition. Then installed of backing up /home, reinstalling, and restoring from backup, you can just do the re-install as normal choosing custom partitioning. IE, for a reinstall, choose custom partition (/, /home, swap), format /, do not format /home. It's been years since I've reformatted my /home partition. |
