Ever since 1.17.x Secondlife has refused to start on my debian lenny system.

1.16.x worked great, so what has been the major change ?

If it NEVER worked I would go looking at my system, but when audio, movies, EVERYTHING worked really reallllly well in the linux client - so I cannot understand the backward step.

here is the output generated in the shell window :-

Sorry,

The Windows-client is better, because LindenLabs put more effort in getting the Windows-client up and running than it does with the Linux client.

Examples:
- Voice support missing
- Support for the Linux-version from LL is completely missing (try calling in a bug through phone, you get it back with the respond that the Linux-client is not supported).
- LL choose for QuickTime as their video-player, which is not available for Linux

The global impression is that the support (and thus the effort made by LL) to make the Linux-client better/as good as the Windows client is lessening every day. Perhaps the 1.18 change gets more OpenSource viewers available ...

Regards,
Marcoh (a Linux-fan, who uses a Windows-notebook for work).

Windows - I cannot get the windows version of the client to work on my linux computer. Through Vmware Server, even with the option to use 3d acceleration (it does work on my computer) SL reports that my virtual 3d card is unsupported. If I use wine, I get errors all over the place all having to do with not being able to find d3d9 (I even copied and pasted over from my virtual machine to no avail) and not being able to register some wine based open gl class (?).

Linux - I just unpack the compressed archive and run the damn blob. Sure, it doesn't have some codecs and functionality and does crash once in a while possibly requiring a reboot, but it RUNS.

My verdict. I'm with Linux on this one.

With my logic, Running something w/ less features > not being able to run something with more features. My $0.02.

What do you mean by "better"?

If you mean "more stable/better supported" than it's most probably the Windows client since the Linux client is still an Alpha release--which means not much support and not guaranteed to work at all.

Yet, for me the Linux client is "better" as it allows me to run SL. And up to now it's running quite smoothly here. With just a Windows client I had no chance to play SL. I'm happy that LL decided to release the source code of the client as Open Source which will help to stabilize the program sooner or later.

I am contente with my Linux-client under Debian. It works fine, it is
the version SecondLife_i686_1_17_0_12. I have Nvidia here.

Windows client on Windows is better than the Linux client on Linux.

At least I actually have sound, can move, and play with the Windows client. The last couple of Linux clients have been terrible on my computer (Ubuntu Feisty/Gutsy, nVidia graphics).

If I want to do anything important, I have to reboot into Windows. I hope things improve soon- I'm sure it used to work better than it does now.

I don't know of any changes. I've seen no difference here.

Thanks for appending that. This output makes me very suspicious:

This suggests that either the colour depth of your display has changed (look through the output of xdpyinfo to see what depth you're running at) or something's gone wrong with your GL support (look through the output of glxinfo).
