I tried to post this yesterday, but the forums were hosed and it didn't work. Anyhow, here goes my second try:

I'm not sure about starting slurls from Konqueror (I don't use it much), but if you know how to use about:config in Firefox, here are the parameters to use:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name: network.protocol-handler.app.secondlife
Type: string
Value: (where the secondlife script is on your hard drive) %U

Name: network.protocol-handler.external.secondlife
Type: boolean
Value: true

name: network.protocol-handler.warn-external.secondlife
type: boolean
Value: false
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps

i already tried this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=558106

than i tried Adamas suggestion too, but nothing happens when clicking on a firefox slurl.
only the 1st time it asked me if want to use secondlife application, and i choosen yes.
my sl folder is positioned as /home/xxxxx/SECONDLIFE/SecondLife-i686-1.21.6.99587
so, in network.protocol-handler.app.secondlife i put /home/xxxxx/SECONDLIFE/SecondLife-i686-1.21.6.99587/secondlife
may the address be wrong?

as far as i know, even if you set up the protocol-handler in your browser, that won't be very useful, since the Linux viewer doesn't support the same behaviour that the Windows viewer offers:
on Windows, if you click on a SLURL in your web browser while the SL viewer is running, the Map window pops up pointing to the SLURL location.
this doesn't work on Linux.

on Linux i usually copy SLURLS from Firefox, i paste and "say" them in the public chat, then i click them in the chat history. this opens a Teleport window.

however, setting up the protocol handler can still be useful: if your SL viewer is NOT running, it will start the moment you click a SLURL in your web browser, and it will set the SLURL location as entering point (that means you should arrive at the desired location after login).

I tested this ('cause I don't use slurls) and found that while it seems to work (secondlife comes up and the address is plugged into the start location box) it doesn't use the proper dot-secondlife folder. All the settings go to default instead of the well-established settings I've been using for a long time.

I don't think LL has really concentrated on making stuff like this work properly for Linux users. We're just not that high a priority. (I still can't get both in-world audio and voice at the same time with 64-bit Linux.) :(

Are you starting the viewer first? I haven't tried that, but clicking on the slurl (the one with the secondlife://(address) URL, not the www.slurl.com/ one) should start the viewer, allow you to log in and go to the place the slurl is for.

This is working on Linux with the maint-viewer-11 , which brings some other real improvements, too, like a faster and stable clipboard handler. You just have to compile it yourself as long as lindens are waiting for I don't know what to happen to integrate this into a release ...

What version of KDE are you using? I've heard of people having problems with KDE4.

The only other things I can think of is either that there's something wrong with your KDE configuration files, something wrong with Firefox, or maybe you're used to Windows and don't realize that Linux is extremely case-sensitive.

(Also, if you're used to typing out DOS/Windows-style directory/folders, remember the slash between folders is a back-slash, not forward -- it's just like an internet URL.)

Beyond that, if the address put into Firefox really is correct, there's something messed up with KDE. You could try deleting or renaming your (dot)KDE folder, restarting KDE and reset your preferences. If you decide to try that, after you get that folder deleted or renamed, do a ctrl-alt-backspace to kill and restart the X-server. Then log back in. (If your version of Ubuntu (Kubuntu?) is like my version of OpenSUSE, you may have to hit ctrl-alt-backspace twice to restart the X-server.)

We'll get this figured out eventually.

thanks, THANKS, I love to compile from branches to test new upcoming features, it's awesome to know that this feature is coming to Linux.

BTW since a couple of months I always compile the viewer on my own, so that I can
- change 'Hide UI' shortcut to a different one that Linux users can actually use
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2085
- apply a resident-provided patch that makes Spacenavigator 3D mouse work on Linux too (this feature may be already have been patched in the branch you mentioned...I'll check it out)

lol, yw. I've seen dbus integration in the maint-viewer-x sources since a couple of months... since I'm looking into viewer sources and compiling it, to get the Spacenavi working :D sorry this is going offtopic: I think VWR-8341 is incredibly useful with the Spacenavi. And almost all of Henris patches are incredibly useful for the viewer at all ... and so is adding openal (vwr-2662). Any hints to find good patches are very appreciated ... :)
