There's a branch project called Open Metaverse Viewer, which is the same codebase as the original SL client, just none of the closed portions (so the logos, icons and program names were changed because SL's trademarks aren't open; similar to the Iceweasel situation on some platforms). Because SLvoice is entirely closed source right now, voice is broken in OMVViewer while an open voice client is developed. So, if you won't miss voice for a few months, take a look at http://www.byteme.org.uk/secondlife/apt-get-a-secondlife.html

I am accurate. I only referred to official LL builds, not second or third party builds. I am aware of several of those. Buford's question did not specify build source, and he posted his question on this forum with no other references mentioned:

I interpreted his question to include only Tofu's official Linden Labs builds.

Under Debian you can put into your source list:

deb http://apt.byteme.org.uk unstable main
deb-src http://apt.byteme.org.uk unstable main

deb http://apt.byteme.org.uk experimental main

------------

Not quite accurate. OMVViewer and SLViewer come from the same source, as previously pointed out.

I'm still accurate. I am referring to builds, as in binaries, not source. Even the Hippo Viewer is based on Linden Labs source.

Linden Labs does not have a 64-bit binary (build), not even a pre-alpha (as far as I know).

Still not accurate, since I'm also talking binaries.

If you know of Linden Labs 64-bit binaries, please tell us all about them. Otherwise, I can't concede.

Linden Labs has done nothing public (to my knowledge) with 64 bit. I have neither seen nor heard of any 64-bit optimized source (which is what you need to compile 64-bit binaries) from Linden Labs. All 64-bit work I have seen is from third parties.

I have a real hard time discounting OMVViewer as "not official" given that it's an unmodified build. You're welcome to your denial if you want it, but keep it to yourself. You're not doing anybody any good arguing semantics for the sake of semantics.

When you can show me a link to a genuine Linden Labs server where I can download a Linden Labs-created 64-bit Linux viewer (binaries, not source), I will call that "Official." Everything else is third-party, regardless of what source is claimed to be used. This is not semantics. This is the definition.

Please ask me if you want to know why I will only accept a build (binary) from Linden labs as being Official. (Hint -- it's the same reason Linden Labs will give.)

Tofu, is there any 64-bit official Linden Labs binary available for testing? You've seen enough from me to know I'll try it out and comment on it. (And, by the way, I have tried a couple of third-party 64-bit viewers -- they all have some problem or other, like no voice, etc..)

LL are starting to add 64 bit libraries to the build system, if you do download the secondlife source code and look at install.xml (after starting build) you will see references for 64 bit linux for the pre build libs packages.

I know this is not what you are after, but it shows a step in that direction. I'm not sure if the build rules are complete for a 64bit build with the pre-built libs but i guess thats very close and probably you could build a LL style viewer from offical source using the LL prebuild libs as a starting point.

Long and short of this is that it shows some one internal to LL has started some work on 64-bit linux builds.

Hi folks. There are no plans to provide a 64-bit Linux viewer release from Linden Lab for the forseeable future, though perhaps one day when we can safely retire the 32-bit builds. I think the reasons are covered in this thread. We do occasionally do 64-bit builds for various reasons but these are internal. If the 32-bit compatibility environments give you no joy then I'd definitely encourage you to use a third-party viewer build such as Robin's!

There's your link. OMVViewer's as official as a 64 bit build gets.

Thanks for the update Tofu! Glad to get that settled :)
