I thought I would post that I am running Ubuntu 7.04(beta) HP Pavilion DVP6000, Nvidia 7400, 2gb RAM and all runs very well.
Sometimes it takes a while to load after pressing the Connect button but thats down to how busy the servers are at that point.
For me this Alpha versions runs better on Ubuntu 7.04 than it does on my Vista partition.
The Alpha has only crashed (more like hung) on me twice since installing it 3 weeks ago.
P.S. I am new to linux and let Ubuntu 7.04 take care of the Nvidia side with its new Restricted Manager, also the Audio worked out the box so I didnt make any changes there. I have not tried to view videos yet but the audio streams fine. Cant be bothered with the Videos (cinema)

I'm running SL on PC Linux OS 2007 (tr3) with an nVidia 7600, works fine...
I am impressed by PC Linux OS and would urge anyone with some spare time to download it (free) and give it a go... From a non techy point of view, this is one of the easiest flavours of linux for a windows user to switch to... I'm not going to say its easy, but with a little reading on google, its no harder than switching to vista from xp...
you can even download the iso, burn it to cd and then try a 'live' version of PC Linux OS, whereby the whole operating system runs from the cd, rather than messing with your windows, so you can try linux without commiting to it... but be warned, the cd based operating system does run a little slower than if it were installed properly, and the nvidia graphics support on the live version is ok, but to get the best out of the graphics you would need to install it properly, then use the update manager to get the proprietry drivers from nvidia

Lets try not to "advertise" our versions of linux, I have heard great things about pc linux tho. It would be great if we avoided advertising/flaming other distros and try to keep this forum agnostic and friendly as possible. If you feel like making an advertisement, make a success thread and don't divert other peoples success stories Glad to hear it is working fine for you two.

I don't see why mentioning the distro is a problem, since other people may want to know if someone's had success on that distro, right?
I ran the alpha Linux client quite successfully on Kubuntu for a while with an ATI Radeon 9800. Even though the drivers never reported the correct amount of video memory and my RAM wasn't fully utilized, performance was acceptable most of the time.

From: RobbyRacoon Olmstead I don't see why mentioning the distro is a problem, since other people may want to know if someone's had success on that distro, right? I would just hate to see someone trying to debug their client and someone says "switch to xxx, it works great here", usually people don't want to switch unless they are just starting out and would be rather insulting to the person trying to fix issues. I have no problems with people saying "hey it works great", but we don't need a manual

its not the mentioning of distros its the 2 paragraph 'this is the best distro ever, if god needed a computer this is the os he would use blah blah blah"
see i could say the exact same thing about mandrivia, cause it is true, as it is on almost any major distro

I dont think that my post was an advertisment for my flavour of linux, it was at best an enthusiastic introduction. Live versions of many distros are available, but many windows users are unaware of live cds and the ability to test drive linux with no commitment. That was the main point of my post, other than to comment on the fact that SL runs fine on my system on that O/S.
Of all of the many live distros i have found, the most window user friendly distro has been pc Linux.. while Knoppix is without doubt the best at hardware detection and configuration is just a bit too techy, The various flavours of Ubuntu are all great, and its the distro i pass out to my students as a good introduction to linux, but as the previous post had already mentioned Ubuntu, is did not see the point of labouring the point. Mandriva (on which PC linux is based) is good, but i found the PC Linux distro more 'windows user' friendly - which when all is said and done, is what the average windows user is looking for when switching from M$ products.
While there are many flavours of Windows, Linux, Unix-like, BSD-like O/Ss out there, the one main factor is that the average user views thier PC like a domestic applience. They dont care what operating system they have, what fancy features it has, just that it gets them on the internet, plays the games, edits thier word documents and plays Second Life. If we are ever to break the closed M$ monopoly on software, which is only set to get more restrictive and expensive, we must get enthusiastic about alternative O/Ss make them user friendly and easy as windows to use for technophobes.
So I apologise if i have upset anyone with any of my posts, but I still stand behind my original comments, that PC Linux OS 2007 is a good choice of windows users to try as a first foray into a non windows O/S and the fact that it is available as a live CD is great.
