Running ArchLinux. I have my sound devices set to use Alsa. I can play multiple sounds simultaneously. However. secondlife locks my sound device. I cannot play any other sounds while playing SL. This is not good because I cannot get Skype calls while I'm playing.
If I disable OSS and ESD in the SL startup script and only use Alsa, I get no sound at all from SL.
Is there a fix?

Then you cannot play multiple sounds simultaneously, you have some sound daemon that's doing this for you. Try forcing it to use esound. If pulse is running, try installing the esound compatability module and force SL to use esound. Also, completely unrelated, I'd reconsider my stand on Skype if I were you. They're on the losing end of a number of lawsuits involving their piracy of GPL'd code right now and might not be viable come court judgements. Besides, do you really want to do business with someone who thinks open source is a one-way street?

I can play multiple sounds simultaneously such as a Youtube video while also playing a song on Rhythmbox. I'll try installing ESD and see if I can get SL to use it. Worth a shot. I use Skype because it works and Ekiga doesn't. If they would fix Ekiga, I would use it. Thanks for the help.

The so-called 'bleeding-edge' viewer in the sticky thread above may help you with this. There are quite a lot of Linux audio changes coming in viewer 1.23.
