working but no sound
03-11-2007 17:42
I got SL working on Ubuntu 6.10 64 bit version but I am getting no sounds at all. Anyone know what is needed to get sounds working in SL? Sounds do work in ubuntu, I watched video files and listened to mp3 songs already in ubuntu.

Hi I get the same error message you had regarding running SL from bin. How did you fix it?
Thanks |

Right can we first check the obvioius. From the folder which you run ./secondlife can you see the file bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin. Secondly is that file executable?, and is it owned by you (ie not root etc)
When in the toplevel secondlife folder ls -l bin/ Will show permissions and ownership if other files/folders are not owned by the correct user SL will not run either as it can't read/write files it needs to. I am just wondering how you unpacked the file you downloaded and if you did it via the desktop may be there is a permission problem or a security thing to stop scripts being automaticly executable? Report back the ls -l and I (or someone) will explain how to change ownership and set executables if you don't already know. |

Sounds do work in ubuntu, I watched video files and listened to mp3 songs already in ubuntu. Right what desktop do you use KDE/Gnome etc? What sound system do you use is it ALSA (probably yes)? In the ./secondlife script try disabling the OSS and ESD sound options by setting them to BAD (can't see the script at the moment but it makes sense when you are in there). That should force ALSA but you may still need a wrapper script. Post back with results and details. |

still can't run

I still can't run it. I've checked permissions and it's all good. Just to be sure I ran sudo ./secondlife and came up with same error. I unpacked it with whatever the standard kubuntu unpacker is. I'm running feisty. I had the same issue when I tried running SL under Ubuntu. I'm trying the first look client and had the same issue with the regular one. Tofu how does one install the 32-bit compatibility environment? Will that help me or the first poster who can run but with no sound? thanks....

readme [ADD]

My guess is that this error indicates that your 64-bit Linux distribution does have a 32-bit compatibility environment installed. Definately need to add this into the SL readme, under [64 bit issues] |

Normally when running SL - or any 32 bit binary - on a 64 bit environment without the necessary libs installed there would be an error message like
bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libX11.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory more precisely indicating that the libs are missing. An error message like user@host:~/SecondLife$ bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin bash: bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: No such file or directory indicates that the 32 bit compatibility environment is completely missing, given all other credentials are in place. If you suspect that some libs out of your 32-bit (compatibility or native) environment are missing to run SecondLife, try checking it using LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$PWD/lib ![]() ![]() (all of it in one line - copy and paste) This command shows the libraries the program would need to run and where it would find them. If you see lines with 'not found' in the list, those libraries are still missing and need to be installed. |

Tofu, I think we need to start an offical updated FAQ... _____________________
