I am stuck on Help Island. It is nice, but rather lonely and I would love to meet the other 2 million people on SecondLife. As soon as I click EXIT and the whole shabang pops up it refuses to allow me to teleport. Teleporting via the map doesn't work either.
I am using Ubuntu 6.06,
Oju.

Hi! There does seem to be an issue at the moment (not confined to the Linux client) which unnecessarily blocks teleporting between some places. My advice would be to try again after logging in again, and if you have no luck then try CTRL-SHIFT-H to teleport directly 'home', from where teleporting to other locations should work.

no luck

'home' unfortunately is Help Island and it won't let me go! So, no luck yet - it seems that I can't find any locations, yet have no problems hanging around (thus logging into and arriving at) on Help Island. I've tried several different locations. I teleported from the "welcome zone" to Help Island without issue.
Could my firewall (firestarter) block the calls? I can't see any blocked traffic in the log, but it may still be an issue.
Oh, and by the way, thanks for all the work on the client - I am quite excited about it.
OP
EDIT: Are you sure it isn't Linux Client specific? I tried 'Search --> Popular Places" and teleported like Capt'n Kirk before he could say "Beam me up Snotty".
It seems the issue may either be related to using the Exit script on Help Island or using the Map...or both.
EDIT 2: Ok, interesting thing for future reference - the regions I actually got to were being reset. Furthermore, zooming in on the map prduced low-res pictures, except for the regions I could teleport to - those were clear.
I am guessing server problems for now.

Beta Grid?
12-15-2006 12:30
Apparently I am stuck in the Beta Grid...thanks to a friendly lady whom directed me in the matter it seems like my client won't let me teleport outside of the beta grid. That is rather odd. Still not sure whether this is related to the Linux client or a broader issue. OP EDIT: I found this on the Beta Grid page: Linux Residents: To run the client, please use the "--grid" flag when launching the viewer (where "grid" is replaced with the name of the preview farm listed above; it's usually "siva" . For more news and information, visit the official Linux client alpha page. So, am I running SL with the wrong flag setting? I tried --siva as suggested (which, I assume would connect me to the test area) and then I get a message prompting me to autodownload (which I refuse and then get logged out). Weird huh?

Solved

Ok, so after a lot of scratching I figured it out. I needed to comment out the --aditi flag in the gridargs.dat file in order to get out of the preview (beta) grid.
I hope this helps somebody else 'cause I met a few people there who complained about being stuck.

How to comment in that file?

I've used # and ; at the beginning of the line but still can't teleport.
Thanks!

If you want to use the main grid, you need to use the main client, not the preview client. The preview/beta client is for the preview grid. http://secondlife.com/community/linux-alpha.php
