Hi all, according to http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=821 and others there seems to be a quite radical move with regards to AMD's ATI drivers for linux support. To summarize what I understood (for the R500 and R600 series): 1. Massive performance improvements with the upcoming 8.41 driver release (this week) 2. Support for AIGLX announced for the upcoming 8.42 driver release (next month) 3. Open Source driver support by opening the specs (including 3D) and providing development support (next few months) If that holds true it would be a lot more than only "nice". Having competitive open source drivers for ATI cards on linux would put quite some pressure on the other vendors, too. Let's wait and see...

Update: Article "ATI/AMD's New Open-Source Strategy Explained"

See http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=826Now, this does not look like a hoax to me. Would be great news for SL (and every other OpenGL app on linux as well), as the common "forget about ATI, buy NVIDIA instead" advice was never really an option for us laptop users

I guess my next video card will be ATI

...unless Nvidia opens up or the Nouveau project matures enough for SL by that time.

Upgrading from ATI to NVidia on a laptop is however an issue As a Die Hard NVidia user, I am DELIGHTED that ATI is doing this. It should get NVidia to push harder on Open Source and in general Linux drivers as well - IF they value their reputation!!

ATI OpenSource drivers

Wow, finally! I'm really excited about that!
I've been praying for this since compiz ever started developing.... I knew AMD would give a boost on things when it bought ATI.

I did it myself on a Dell Inspiron E1505 -- it has a swapable card on it. But yes, I'll be happy when ATI's on par with NVidia -- and things go faster since any changes in the X11 system don't have the vendors playing catchup.
