sorry im a newbie linux user,
I normally run sl on windows, but my pc crashed i couldnt find my windows boot disk, i ordered a new one, but it may take some time to get here in the mean time i found a boot disk for linux that came with a anouther pc we had, It was enough to get me back online, but i can figure out how to get sl to run, i know for yahoo i had to go to root and type in a run command, is there a command to use to get sl to run, so i can at least get my messages and keep in contact with everyone till i can get my windows back up.
thank you in advance

For future reference, the First Rule of Web Forums: search for your answer before starting a new thread. There's a sticky at the top of the forum that points to the download link. To make it easy on you, it's here: http://secondlife.com/community/linux-alpha.phpAs for how to actually install it, those instructions are also in the forum already. But again, for simplicity: open a terminal tar -xjf SecondLife_1_9_0_21.tar.bz2 Then, whenever you want to play: open a terminal cd SecondLife_1_9_0_21 ./secondlife For more tips on how to, for example, make the game run more smoothly, search the forum. Lots of good advice here. Search general Linux forums (linux-noob.org, the forums for you distribution) as well. Might learn lots of tricks to make your life easier for the next n days. Oh, and NEVER NEVER NEVER perform normal user actions when you're root! That's just asking to get rooted, and then the FBI shows up at your door with evidence that your computer initiated a DoS attack on a government server. Bad news, all around Whatever you're trying to do with Yahoo, you DON'T need to be root to do it.

just wanted to say ty for trying,
Already had it downloaded, and already read the forums, however it still was not running, i got a few error messages that a couple others had gotten yet there solutions had not helped me,
and i hadnt seen anything about typing in a run command, like the yahoo messanger instuctions, as far as that goes it says right on the install page for yahoo it says to logg in as root and what to type, so weather its needed or not thats what there page said to use, (and yes i know linux has a messenger compatible with yahoo, but i tells me the password i have been using for 5 years is wrong, so we downloaded the real yahoo one,
but anyways ty so much for trying and replying, I cant ask for more then that,

From: Silver Dangle sorry im a newbie linux user, I probably can't say much things that are encouraging: currently the Linux SecondLife version is much less usable and developed than the Windows counterpart. It also takes some knowledge of Linux to be able to install and run SL. First, you need to have the binary video drivers (from NVidia or ATI), that support OpenGL. Then, try this installer (download, save somewhere, open a terminal/console, make it executable with 'chmod +x SLInstaller.pl', run as a user): http://www.idojarasrendeles.com/sl-alpha-installer/SLInstaller.plIt will download and unpack SL, and you can run it from YOURHOME/SecondLife/current directory. (You need to have wget, tar, bzip2 installed.)

From: someone i got a few error messages that a couple others had gotten yet there solutions had not helped me, Knowing exactly what the errors are, and some information about your system (Linux distro, processor, graphics card) would help us help you. From: someone and i hadnt seen anything about typing in a run command, like the yahoo messanger instuctions, as far as that goes it says right on the install page for yahoo it says to logg in as root and what to type, Ahh, you meant to INSTALL Yahoo Messenger... I thought you were being root when you ran the program. Very different. For most software you become root to install it system-wide. SL currently runs from the user's home directory, so there's no need to be root to install SL. You just untar and run. So, if you post your errors and system specs, we can probably figure out what's going wrong.

Somethings do take a while to learn and set up in linux, and if you should ever return to using linux, there are a lot of helpful groups and pages all over the net to help you out as well as here in SL. Heck, I tried and gave up too with using linux (or so I thought at the time) before I could finally begin to grasp it somewhat (and I'm no expert ) and I can relate to your frustration. Best wishes to you.
