Audio fails on Mono building client 1.21

I can't seem to start audio on the latest Mono building client version 1.21.0.94415 on several different distros (Ubuntu and OpenSuse).

I don't see the old audio init messages and instead I get:
WARNING: init_audio: Failed to create an appropriate Audio Engine

Okay I am being a bit impatient and running the Aditi beta-test client on Agni (the main live SL grid) on one of the 500 sims that are running the version 1.24 of the server this weekend. I am desperate to try some audio scripts to see whether the bedded-in Mono handles them any better.

At the moment I can compile scripts with the mono option then play with them on the current 1.20 client to hear the results. The results are poor in that there is no improvement on pre-mono results. I understand that since the compile has happened on the server this method of testing should be valid.

Still it would be nice not to lose audio in the up-and-coming release of SL 1.21

There was a build configuration issue. Audio should be fixed in the official 1.21RC0.
