I take it you need to copy over a few files and directories from the previous install folder as it seems SL doesn't use a dot folder in one homes folder.

Which files and folders does one need to copy ?

Is it just:

./SecondLife
./character

??

You should install the new client completely, too many files are being changed. Just untar the new version and copy over your settings.ini from the old install to the new (you find it in SecondLife/user_settings/). Then you're ready to go.

Just ./SecondLife should do it.. You just have to hope they have not changed the behaviour of the config file in the new version tho!
