Try executing the program from a terminal manually, like this:

Open a terminal.
cd to the directory Second Life is installed in.
type ./secondlife

It's a moot point right now; 1.8.4.7 is useless; we have to wait until they release a 1.9 client for Linux. But go ahead and at least try to get to the login screen -- that way you know 1.9 will work.

(If any of my instructions don't make sense to you, this may help: my command line basics page)

[root@localhost SecondLife_1_9_0_17]#

i asked the linux client users and they told me to ty the following commands, and try again:

ps aux | grep seco
killall secondlife-bin
killall -9 secondlife-bin

these are the results i got back:

[root@localhost ~]# ps aux | grep seco
root 3772 0.0 0.2 3760 712 pts/1 S+ 21:55 0:00 grep seco
[root@localhost ~]# killall secondlife-bin
secondlife-bin: no process killed
[root@localhost ~]# killall -9 secondlife-bin
secondlife-bin: no process killed
[root@localhost ~]#

what else could be wrong?

This is a FAQ. Use tar -jxf to unpack the SL distribution, not presumably a (broken) archiver-app.

Linden Lab should probably put dummy files in directories they don't want broken archivers to fail to create - this is happening far too often.

How did you unpack secondlife? The message indicates that one of the folders is missing. Some graphical unpack frontends leave out empty folders, and SL will choke on this.

Try unpacking manually by using the following command in the folder where SL has been downloaded:

tar -xjvf SecondLife_1_9_0_17.tar.bz2

Then try again. I hope this helps.

They should rather create folders that are missing upon first startup. It's just poor program design.

Shameless plug: try my SL Alpha installer script thing, it might help, or just make things easier... Not that it does anything too complex yet, but just run it, and it'll do the job.

tar -xjvf SecondLife_1_9_0_17.tar.bz2

Interesting(?) geeky point: you don't need the flag symbol for tar (-) it also works with

tar xjvf SecondLife_1_9_0_17.tar.bz2

Great if you like learning inconsistent commands, or want to save time by typing one less character!

This is in fact true :) I'm just so used to type the - character that I don't even realize typing it anymore. Same goes for ps, by the way. So ps awx and ps -awx are in fact the same.

Well, ps is a little flaky about it. Try 'ps ef' and then 'ps -ef'... different results. :-P

Interesting.. never noticed that before, but as the above post notes, ps is not quite the same. This is from TFM:

This version of ps accepts several kinds of options:
1 UNIX options, which may be grouped and must be preceded by a dash.
2 BSD options, which may be grouped and must not be used with a dash.
3 GNU long options, which are preceded by two dashes.
