No sound for the most part, forced ALSA, ESD and OSS.

Will play a "gravely/scratchy" sound for a bit (forced ALSA or ESD or no forcing at all) for about a minute and a half IF no other sound using program is playing when SL starts up.

Then silence. It's totally silent straight off if I've got Amarok playing or if a system sound plays during SL's startup.

Any ideas?

I forget the exact sound chipset, but it's that "high-def" on-board one HP likes so much.
Kubuntu 8.04 upgraded from Kubuntu 7.10. (32 bit)

Edit & update: I screwed up my install earlier and decided to re-install. Same problem now on a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.04

Ubuntu 8.04 need pulseaudio server by default.
you need to start it before any other application that need sounds

pulseaudio -D

I don't have pulseaudio installed.
And last time I played with it, it made something of a ginormous mess.

I installed Xubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 from scratch, and pulseaudio wasnt installed by default. Neither was ESD. But even so, ALSA/OSS worked fine. So I assume it has to be something different. Is something else hogging ALSA? And if you install ESD, you still have to edit esd.conf at /etc/esound/ so it will look like this:

[esd]
# autospawning is not recommended, since it can't really be done
# right. If you want your login session to be using a sound daemon,
# you should start it from the session controller, not some random
# app inside.
auto_spawn=1
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2
spawn_wait_ms=100
# default options are used in spawned and non-spawned mode
default_options=

This will set ESD to be ready for use when the SL client needs it.
I also replaced libesd-alsa0 with libesd0. Otherwise the sound started to loop after a while if i used ESD with SL.
I hope one or all of these tricks helped at least a little ^_^

Thanks for the help, Asriazh.

Sadly, it didn't work ... exactly. It's odd, to say the least: Sound will work in SL once in a while, no gravely/scratchiness or anything. It just works.

The rest of the time, it doesn't work at all.

I can't see any rhyme or reason, seems totally random. Amarok running or not, system sound or not, any media player or not. I'm at a loss.

I tried setting up PulseAudio but it got in a fight with ALSA and lost, that is to say, I could not set up ALSA as an audio sink or find any other sink for it. It was happy to take all my media programs as sources including SL but without a working sink it got very quiet around here =^_^=

EDIT: Never mind, I got it. Thanks again.
