Just got the new SL 1.8.4 RC. Thank you! Now video is working. Gotta admit I gave up on the x86_64 (for now) and I'm using now Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy, which is the best desktop distro I've seen so far. I'm running Compiz Fusion with all the nice effects and SecondLife in it almost without any performance loss. So what? The catch is, this is my same old Dell Latitude 131L with ATI Xpress 1150! Yes, all running in my ATI. Already tested on my ATI 9600XT desktop also. Flawless. This is turning into one of my happiest Fridays, IT wise. I'm putting up a video capture tonight in my blog for anyone interested (Portuguese) http://cafe-ti.blog.brRoyer Pessoa

Well, I'm glad it's turning out well for somebody - I just tried to login, and the viewer is telling me that 1.18.4.0 is a _required_ update (I'm using 1.18.3.5 normally). That would be fine, except for the fact that 1.18.4.0 seg faults whenever I try to log in. >_>

I just now logged in with 1.18.3 (5), no message at all. 1.18.4 is a preview/first look/RC anyway, isn't it?

Yeah it should be... even deleting .secondlife doesn't have an effect though, so I guess my only option is to wait.
Update: Deleting my SL viewer's directory and then downloading a fresh copy did the trick; the viewer no longer thinks that 1.18.4.0 is a mandatory upgrade.

64bit

Great saturday for me!
Back to Ubuntu Gutsy 64bit, made SL viewer and video work 100%!
Installed the IA32 ilbs recomended in the secondlife script. I have both 32 and 64bits Ubuntu Gutsy in my notebook. I moved the /usr/lib/gstream* directory somewhere else, and linked the 32bit directory in there! ln -s /media/sda5/usr/lib/gstream* .
Everything working smoothly!
Using the chroot trick makes SL much slower than normal for me.
For sound crackling, as I posted in other topics:
That' s it... sudo apt-get esound. If you have the ESD plugin for PulseAudio, let apt remove it! Tested 32/64bits. Set the Sound Configur in Ubuntu for Automatic and use ESD software mixing. In the secondlife script force ESD by uncomenting the OSS and ALSA BAD variable. 100% now!

Stable client works, RC crashes, simple as that. I could not be F'd trying to get it to work, I'm right over that.

Oh well, I can't help myself, I just gotta keep trying. I shouldn't complain, sorry.
Simply added esound and she runs. Even with compiz in KDE.

This works for you only because you happen to have both 32 and 64-bit systems installed. This is fine for testing, but in the normal user environment, most people will have only one of those available. (And don't recommend that library hot-swapping, it can break other apps!) The big problem arises when people running 64-bit systems with ia32 emulation try to run the new client, because there is no such thing as a gstreamer ia32 emulation library. The only general solution to this is the same as LL did for FMOD, namely supply 32-bit gstreamer libs in the download package. Morg.

Video broken again?
11-03-2007 05:56
After 1.18.4(1)rc and (2)rc my video stopped working again! Was it disabled in the client again? I'm using x86_64 Ubuntu 7.10, with the 32bits gstreamer (/lib/gstreamerXXX) copy as posted before, but no video anymore and I get only this:
2007-11-03T12:52:36Z WARNING: grab_gst_syms: Couldn't load DSO: libgstreamer-0.10.so.0 2007-11-03T12:52:36Z WARNING: init: Couldn't find suitable GStreamer 0.10 support on this system - video playback disabled.
gst-launch still works with the selected video stream.
I did this /lib/gstream copy from the i386 distro because none of my attempts do override the LIBRARY search path were successfull with the SL viewer. Tried editing the secondlife script, to put the 32 libraries before the 64bit ones and tried in my local user's profile also. What would be the correct way to tell the SL viewer to look for 32 libs somewhereelse first before looking for 64bits libs? I'm not an expert on environm. variables, just tried changing what made sense for me. Don't tell me to chroot, which I've tried and make the SL viewer much slower than in the 32bits emulation.
Thanks for any help/ideas!
