Ubuntu 8.04 Screen Flickering

I've got SL up and running on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, and the only problem that I am having is that the screen keeps flickering to black. It is only SL that does this so there are no problems with the monitor. I used the restricted-manager jockey.gtk to install the proper ATI drivers. (I'm running a Radeon 9550). The more detail that is on the screen (houses, decoration, etc) the worse the flickering gets.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

I have a 9550 as well, firstly it's a gen 1 card, it doesn't support an express function, so thats bad #1. I can manage about a draw distance of 95m at minimal settings. I have 2.5 gigs of ram, all that craziness. Today I did get a huge amount of artifacting, on almost every TGA texture in my sim, I cleared my cache just now and that seems to help. So far anyway. But honestly, there is nothing more you can really do. Go to ATI and download the newest drivers, they are about Oct 2007, if you haven't updated yet. It did help a huge amount. But with such a limited card there is really nothing besides buying a new computer really. Which I will do when I am totally useless, but really don't care to either.

Try turning off visual effects in Ubuntu's desktop.
System> Preferences> Appearance> Visual Effects

I had this same problem, I think. It winks out periodically. Looks like you're blinking, right? Turning off Ubuntu's (actually, Gnome's) visual effects fixed it for me.

Ah! That worked like a charm. It runs perfectly smoothly now, thanks :D

I use Compiz Switch (http://forlong.blogage.de/article/pages/Compiz-Switch)

It adds a button to your toolbar and allows you to turn off the eye candy for running SL, then when you have finished, click it again to turn your desktop effects back on.
