This is what I get when I cd to the directory and type ./secondlife. I'm using PCLinuxOS .92, which is based on Mandrake. I tried setting my res to 24 bit, which is the highest it goes, and it didn't work. My desktop res is 1280x1024. Help please!
Edit-My vid card is a Geforce 6100 onboard my asus k8n-vm mobo. I think I'm using the VESA driver.
[hel@localhost SecondLife-linux-02072006]$ ./secondlife

I think I'm using the VESA driver.

That's a fair guess. Did you install the Linux nVidia drivers? You can get them from http://www.nvidia.com/. After installing them, run the nvidia-xconfig script to make X use the new drivers.

Sorry to say the obvious, but if you are not linux geek why would you try to run a Linux alpa client.

The voices in my head actually went 'duh, install the nvidia drivers' after I posted. after a bit of prodding (read, figuring out which version of the drivers I needed, and then how on earth to get them working right, yay for nvidia-xconfig), I've got them working, and gotten second life running, yay! But thanks for the suggestion!
as for why I'd run the SL Linux if I'm not a linux geek, well, I'm working on the geek thing, and I vastly prefer linux to windows even if I don't yet know how to do a lot of the configuration and such. And a lot of current linux distros are great in that you don't NEED to be a linux geek to be able to use them! I've got my 64 year old uncle and 61 year old mom both using linux. (honestly, they do better with it than I do, cos they just go 'oh, ok, firefox, thunderbird, openoffice, yay,' whereas I'm trying to poke around in the guts of the OS and regularly breaking things.)
and actually, with this SL linux client, the only thing I was regularly booting into windows for is now a non-issue. Yay!

I can relate, Hel. Actually the linux client runs many times better than the windows client (which for some reason is subject to massive system lag at regular intervals, though I'm guessing that's more Windows' fault than SL's). My knowledge with linux comes and goes as I use it, the more I use it the more I remember. The less I use it, the less I remember. Sadly it's been almost a year since I last used it (in my college program) so I don't recall a whole lot of the tricky things like recompiling a kernel.

Yeah, I'm noticing the linux client running much more smoothly than the windows one did as well!
And yeah, I can't believe I didn't think right off the bat to install the nvidia drivers, or that it took me ages to remember how to config them, when this time last year, I had to do that about 10 times in about 2 weeks when setting up linux on my laptop!
But it's working, it's beautiful, and as soon as the sound works, it'll be the best thing evar! :)
...*notices the numerous exclamation marks* not that I'm excited and happy about there being an SL linux client at all. Really. *grin*

I posted this elsewhere, but upgrade to the new 2007 version of PC Linux OS... well worth it... and the nVidia drivers are easy to install via the package manager

Have fun

Thanks, but this post was over a year old. I'm not on the same distro anymore (the attitudes of the PCLOS maintainers annoyed me), and haven't had problems getting SL to work since pretty much that post.

it is, imagine how much you will be saving your mind from those mind numbingly boring windows. My productivity hits the floor and I cant concentrate well when using Microsoft, its just so boooorinng.

My productivity hits the floor when trying to use linux at home.
X11 + any WM just doesn't work for me.

Console based servers though, different matter altogether. No way I'd ever trust windows in a server environment.

@Hel: I hope you taught your mom and uncle never to run as root. Unlike windows, the administrative rights actually mean something :p

I do everything in linux: word documents, audio and video editing, graphics work, gaming, programming. It doesn't let me down :P

sure some stuff would be easier in windows, but most off that would cost money anyways, 200 dollars is ~55000 Lidens :P

They don't even know what root is, and the only thing either of them ever does that requires root access is run adept to check for updates. I've got them both on Kubuntu these days.

See the difference is I boot up my computer to explore the internet & play games against it and other people. Not for the challenge of making it work, that sounds like owning a pommy/italian car :)

I explore and play games, only difference is now I don't have to reinstall every 2-3 months :P

It's like buying a car and deciding not to run it with enough oil, sure it may run for awhile but then it locks up hard and you need to put a new engine in... Or paying for a car that has a transmission filled with graphite, it will run smooth as grease until the transmission jams up.
