I finally got that shiny new graphics card (nVidia 6600) I've been wanting, and now finally the Linux Alpha for SL works! Only problem is when copying complex outfits it freezes, and then I have to wile my time away posting on forums about how awesome this game is, waiting for the Grid to let me back on. I am so glad that I can explore this world even though I can't afford Microsoft Windows. Thanks! Not sure how much I'll be able to contribute, but if I see something that's fixable I can always get lucky and find something in the source.

Not bad at all

I just got SL working on Fedora Core 6 last night after wrestling with the nVidia drivers for several evenings. I'm a Windows geek with limited Linux knowledge - just enough to keep my old RedHat mailserver limping along for several years until now, when I'm repurposing an XP box to replace it. And hey, since this box ran SL satisfactorily under XP, I figured I'd take a peek at the Linux client. (If Windows had trouble like that with a major video card driver, Microsoft would catch hell for it even if it was the OEM's fault. Just saying...)

I didn't have a lot of time to spend in SL once I got it working, but I was rather impressed - after all the warnings about this being an alpha with limited functionality, etc., I was expecting something really half-assed. I didn't notice any problems with basic functionality, no UI problems or even any significant differences from what I'm used to in Windows. I'm sure I'd start to notice a few things if I had tried anything really complicated, but I just didn't have time for that.

Guess I can stop feeling so sorry for all the Linux geeks out there with "only" an alpha client. :)

Thanks for the feedback.
I like to think we're pretty close to beta now. :)
