I installed SL linux alpha with Fedora core 5. Looking thorugh the forums here I was able to install and redirect the libraries, and install the needed Nvidia driver and get it running.

I have never tried SL before so I saw it for the first time under Linux. I know that this is Alpha software, so I was ready for it to have a LOT of problems, but I was able to move and interact well (even if certain mouse or key combinations did not work).

I decided to see what I was missing in the way of sound and functionality, so I went back to my Windows drive and loaded SL for windows. Now I can campare and contrast functionality a bit. I will stick with the Windows client for a while until I get versed in SL know how . So far I am very favorably impressed with general performance of the Alpha software.

Can't WAIT to get sound with the linux client!

Thanks to everyone who has posted soluitions for errors, otherwise I would not have been able to run SL under Linux, being the Linux Newbie that I am

Sound is hopefully on the cards, Icculus's finger did mention openal and second life in the same sentence a while back.

My goodness. Good luck to him. I can't help wondering why though -- there's a perfectly reasonable FMOD implementation for Linux, plus OpenAL, nice though it is for what it does, doesn't support some of the FMOD features that SL leans upon (i.e. trivial HTTP streaming). I guess we'll find out where this all goes!
