Selected NVIDIA forceware drivers have problems with shiny objects in the Windlight client. These drivers may also cause shaders to fail to load.

Known drivers to have problems:
169.01
169.02
169.04
169.09
169.10
169.13
169.17
169.21

Be prepared to downgrade your drivers if you install the 169 series of drivers.

Hi!

I seems this MAY be OK with the newest windlight (17 December 2007).

Anyone tested it yet?

Nvidia just released 169.07 as stable today. I haven't tested it yet.

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=946&num=1 has an overview of the changes (Phoronix article).

I gave 169.07 a go today, but didn't get as far as SL because as soon as X starts it spins up the fan on the GFX card to maximum and leaves it that way. No way I could live with it whining away like a jet turbine so I downgraded to 169.04 again.

It Works for me!
12-21-2007 13:16
I downloaded and installed the new NVidia Linux driver, the new Windlight, ran it, it works.

Wish life was always that simple!

By the way, same driver version and same Windlight does not work properly for me under Windows XP :p The graphic option "Hardware Skinning" and therefore also "Avatar Cloth" are not available (are greyed out) in Windows - under Linux, Perfect!

Thanks Tofu! And all those who may also have helped a teeny weeny bit :D

169.07 seems to work for me as well using the 76116 windlight client. It's just that at 4x Antialiasing horizontal lines like SL windows have seem to pulse. This effect disappears using 2x or 8x Antialiasing. If i go back to the 100.14.23 driver, the pulsing at 4x AA is gone.

kernel 2.6.24-rc6-git1, xorg 7.3, xorg-core 1.4.1-git20071212

NVidia 169.07 unstable with SL?
12-27-2007 01:28
I have gone back to the previous NVidia driver.

Both in Windows and in Linux (more important by FAR :D ) I got the phenomena with this 169.07 driver that the application windows simply vanished. In Linux, not just SL but also opera. * Poof *, gone... :p

I have gone back to 100.14.19 which seems a LOT more stable on my setup. This first few days I ran with the 169 driver were OK, but a few days later... ugh :(

You're not the only one. Check the bottom of http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=199671 -- It's Gentoo's bug database on the driver. It's not good.

Can you try putting this in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "true"

I hear that fixes the KDE 3.5/QT 3.5 problems.

No luck, Drake...

I entered the following:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "7800 GS"
Option "Coolbits" "1"
Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "true"
# Option "NvAGP" "1"
Option "NvAGP" "3"
EndSection

And in Xorg.0.log I get:

...
(II) Loading extension NV-CONTROL
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Option "UseCompositeWrapper" is not used
(==) RandR enabled
...

I am on Suse 10.0 on this computer...

Maybe I need the 169 NVidia Driver?

Update: on 169.07 the "Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "true" is accepted.

I hope it helps, because my 100.14 driver is also showing these symptoms... :p

Increased stability 169.07 using UseCompositeWrapper

Drake, this worked on 169.07. This is now much more stable than 100.14.9 was, which ignores this option. This is true both under KDE 3.4 and FVWM, both of which had problems. Thank you!

That was on the Gentoo bug listing. I'll drop an update on 'em.
