Hi All,
I have a problem with the ground textures with Secondlife in Linux. The problem has been apparent in both the current version: 1.19.0 (79185) and prior versions.
The problem is simply that no matter what I try, the chosen ground textures are not shown irrelevant of which sim I am on. It appears that only the default ground texture of the sim is displayed. Check out any island off the mainland.
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz Memory: 2027 MB OS Version: Linux 2.6.22.16-0.2-default #1 SMP 2008/02/01 19:36:55 UTC i686 Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce 7600 GS/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL Version: 1.2 (2.1.2 NVIDIA 169.09) LLMozLib Version: 1.1.0 (Mozilla GRE:1.8.0.12_0000000000) Packets Lost: 1789/47745 (3.7%) Viewer Digest: 4279d849-29ae-d8bd-1dae-b5481076d412
Can anyone please help; both the standard and Windlight viewers work really well apart from this.
Thanks in advance for any any you may be able to provide.

Which still has the same problem.
Anyone any ideas ? Do you have this problem ?
Thanks

Shameless bump
Can anyone confirm they have this problem or even that they don't. Any feedback no matter how small, like 'yes I have same problem' or 'no I don't have the problem' would help.
Thanks

I'm not sure I understand the problem. What ground textures are you referring to? Everything looks normal to me. If I'm on a beach, I see sand. If I'm in the mountans, I see rock. On my parcels, I see grass.
Where can I look for something like what you describe: what do you see there and what should you see there?

Thanks for the reply !!!
When a sim is setup it has a default texture. In the majority of cases this is then changed by the Estate owner to a combination of other textures that they define for different levels and directions. This gives a more random and pleasing appearance to a sim. You can see this anywhere by clicking World -> Region / estate -> Ground textures.
The problem is that these textures are ignored and only the default sim texture (the one the sim was 'born' with) is shown.
You can come over to my sim Thrace 190,182,22. All I see is the base texture of the islands, ie a grainy over zoomed texture of the base sim 'sand and stones everywhere'. This should be covered with the textures indicated in 'World -> Region / estate -> Ground textures'.
I would be real happy if you could check this and give me some feedback, its driving me nuts.
Thanks in advance, Anda

** SOLVED **
It appears, after some help in word and a comparison of their About -> Secondlife settings, that it was something to do with the xgl versions.
Mine showed : Graphics Card: GeForce 7600 GS/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL Version: 1.2 (2.1.2 NVIDIA 169.09)
and working machine showed : Graphics Card: GeForce 7600 GS/AGP/SSE2 OpenGL Version: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 169.09
The problem was linked with enabling : gnome-xgl-switch --enable-xgl This forced the Version 1.2.
using : gnome-xgl-switch --disable-xgl Gnome loaded with version 2.1.2 and the textures work.
Not a perfect fix as I have now lost Compiz usage but at least it does work.
Cheers, Anda

Well, I just went over there and compared the ground textures with the options set by the estate owner, and they match. I also went to neighboring sims to make sure I was looking at the right stuff. I then looked over all the graphics options of the three SL viewers I use: the standard, release candidate and windlight. I can't find any adjustment there that would affect terrain textures in that way.
So, there are a couple of more exotic options: first, clear the cache. Depending on the viewer you're using, this option should be in edit | preferences | network. You'll need to relog for this to take effect.
If that doesn't work, the only other possibility I can come up with is that there is something in your ".secondlife" folder (it's in your home folder) that is hosing things up. The option here is to rename or delete this folder. As it is a hidden folder, you'll need to set your file browser's option to view hidden entries.
First, make sure you are not running SL, then delete or rename the ".secondlife" folder. You will lose all the logs SL keeps, and any saved passwords. Then restart SL and and see if that fixes it.
Good luck!

Oh, nevermind!

Hi All, Ok so it appears that enabling XGL for compiz on OpenSuse 10.3 stops the correct textures working. I have therefore moved to using AIGLX instead following the HOWTO document : http://en.opensuse.org/AIGLXNow I have Xinerama twin screens at 1920x1200, full compiz fusion and Secondlife Windlight running perfectly. A happy Linux User ! Cheers, Anda
