I've read through most of the threads on getting video running under the linux client - still no go.
Have video enabled in preferences - see the movie icon on the bar - res the video player and click on the green arrow - get the screen which blinks once.
Clicking on the play button on the bar quickly reverts to the play button (pause and stop flash once).
Is Kubuntu (KDE) a special case?
Other details:
Nvidia 7600 GS w/ 2 meg ram w/ latest proprietary nvidia drivers; running at just short of ultra resolution - Dual Core Pentium 4, 4 gig ram. DSL connection.
UPDATE:
Runnning SL from a terminal I saw this when I tried to play a movie:
bus_callback:312: GST error: "http://secondlife.com/community/video/trailer_contest_2005/JavierPuff.mov": Not Found
So.... apparently the movie 'available' on the parcel is in fact a bad reference. Is there a good 'test' video I can set my parcel to point at to continue testing?
Getting somewhere...
Found a .mov file of a tutorial which started playing. Yah! But it crashed my client in about 3 seconds. Boo.
So, what do I do now?

OK.
Running SL from a terminal I see the following when I try to watch a movie:
bus_callback:312: GST error: Could not open resource for writing.
I'm getting good ambient sounds and interface feedback noises. And I can play audio.
Tried ALSA and ESD. Same problem.
Is this a 'riights' problem?

Is this a 'riights' problem? Sounds like a hardware issue. Are you normally able to run two different programs at once and hear sound from them both? If not, you should look into a sound device that can handle multiple streams.

Well, the system was running a motherboard-imbedded Intel ICH sound system. Replaced it with a Creative Alive card.
Now it seems to be working properly.
It apparently WAS a hardware problem. Though it did work once for a few seconds, AND I was able to get ambient sounds AND music to play. Something about audio with video broke it.
Anyway, working now.
Thanks.
