I downloaded the "latest" viewer (Version Number: 1.20.16.97603) from the download page and now I can't log on because it's "out of date"?

It's telling me I have to download something else.

Did you start SL with an old shortcut or did you let the installation program program start it for you?

You might try uninstalling SL and reinstalling it.

I gave up on latest beta viewers a long time ago.
Several times I renewed the viewer only to find this within a day or two.
Having only a 256k connection makes it an hours wait while d/l 'ing.

So I just stick with the stable and add the nicolas patches (Hooray he has new ones)

We don't "Install" SL in Linux. Just unzip and run.
Unless it's the Slviewer (which I don't use) which CAN be installed from a program database called a repository. So your question is relevant but I don't think so.

Linux.
I was using "New Posts", didn't notice the forum title, and the post doesn't say what operating system was in use. System specs in the post never hurt.

Unfortunately I have no advice since it's Linux.

Given the context of this forum (Linux Client Testers), the operating system is already implied.

There's a file called gridsarg.dat in your Second Life installation directory. Replace --channel "Second Life Release Candidate" by --channel "skipRC1".

Did manually update myself tho.
