My setup:

SecondLife_i686_1_12_3_4

Ubuntu 6.06 (with all updates)

Kernel 2.6.15-27-686 #1 SMP PREEMPT

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X800 XL Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (8.25.18)

With this setup I was not able to play the game "out of the box" at all, because the game crashed (with a freeze of my X server) every time that my avatar was showed up on screen.

I enabled "LL_GL_NOEXT" into the "secondlife" script.

The "secondlife" script says "report whether it helps in the Linux Client Alpha Testers forum".

So, I report that this helped me!

Indeed, it runs very smoothly (maybe something like 100 fps) with sound (including streams) and with all graphic settings to the max.

p.s.: by the way how can I display FPS ?

Thanx

ctrl-shift-1(one) toggles a stats window.

Thanks for the "ctrl-shift-1" tip!

I was wrong about my previous FPS guess :)

It was so smooth that I wrongfully guessed a 100 FPS.

But, with the same setup (see my last post), in 800x600, according to the stats window, the FSP changes from 25 to 35.

This range seems to be enough to have a smooth effect.

I think a mall would be in order, or something equally laggy. Can you transport to Furnation Prime? Just walk a few steps inside the building you'll see, the Luxor, and take a FPS reading.

I barely touch 20 fps inside there.

For reference, film and European TV (PAL) is roughly 24 fps. US TV (NTSC) is almost 30 fps. Almost, because of how TV is encoded.

Helped here too

I was also having trouble with the current SL client (1.12.3.4) on my Ubuntu Edgy system (Turion 64 ML-28, 1.125GB RAM, Radeon XPress 200M w. 128MB shared memory; software has all current updates, and the newest ATI driver that apt-get fetches, which may not be the newest one on ati.com) -- it would lock up the system HARD, so that it wouldn't respond to any keystrokes. With LL_GL_NOEXT, it runs -- well, walks, which is about all the SL client ever does on this system (the slow integrated graphics are the culprit), even under Windows. (The frame rate under Windows and Linux are about equal.)

This fix worked for 1.12.3.6 on my system too!

Fedora Core 5
Kernel: 2.6.18-1.2239.fc5smp (with kmod-fglrx-smp-8.29.6-1.2.6.18_1.2239.fc5 )
ATI Radeon X300 (128MB share ram... yeah, I know...)
1 GB Ram
server glx version string: 1.2
P4 3.4 GHz with Hyperthreading enabled.

Thanks for all the hard work, eh!

For those whom LL_GL_NOEXT has helped, please check out the new LL_GL_BLACKLIST option in SL 1.13.0.2 or later. If you're feeling experimental you can use this to pinpoint and disable the specific GL extension which is causing your hangs, without unnecessarily sacrificing features and speed. If you then report back with your findings, I can disable the troublesome GL extension by default.
