I use openSUSE 10.3 (i586) and the Second Life 1.20.11 (0) Jun 25 2008 16:55:22 (Cool SL Viewer), install esound demon, and edit you SL startup shellscript to include: #export LL_BAD_ESD=x export LL_BAD_OSS=x export LL_BAD_ALSA=x ciao,Kephra

Hmm.... done that and now I have no sound at all in SL.. should I change something else? Or have I put the code in the wrong place? I copied and pasted it to the secondlife shell script -- is there a particular place it should go?

You need to activate esound in the gnome sound preferences panel. As I remember, it must be the first checkbox at the top of a tab dedicated to desktop sounds (i don't have a gnome environment to verify it now).
If it still don't work, don't forget to deactivate esound and # the following line (export LL_BAD_OSS=x) to determine if SL uses OSS or ALSA on your system. I can only have sound with OSS in SL (ALSA works fine with other programs), and I don't have sound in videos too, nor I can use the voice. I didn't spend time looking for solutions about these problems because I don't really use these features.
