this really seems to be an issue, perhaps an amd64 subforum should be created

Yes. It appears that amd64 systems need extra attention. I have been slowly unpacking i386 deb packages and copying them into my lib32 folder. The last lot was libc6!. With my tongue in my cheeck ... I cannot really expect much more since 80% of the world seems to be relying on a 32bit operating system ... that most probably paid good money for as well.
Anyway I am tired, and going to bed. I think it may be another six months or so, and I might have another try ... else I will leave this one alone and find my entertainment elswhere. Thanks to Tofu for your time and effort. |

A properly configured 64 bit system will run Second Life out of the box in 32 bit mode. Most of the needed 32 Bit libraries are included with the SL package, any missing ones can usually be installed via the distribution's package management tool.

How does one setup the system to run in 32 bit mode?. Apt will not let me load fundamental 32bit libs like libc6 and SDL I had to copy the files to the lib32 directory myself. Also, wouldn't I need different kernel to load 32bit modules and 3D is a kernel module, isnt it?. The latest ATI driver has both 32 and 64 bit in the one, but only loads the appropriate driver for the hardware.
I know I could load up a x86 kernel and boot that, but I do not like dual booting now ... I am older and lasier. I will probably try Suse 10.2 though, I hear it is really good. I was not actually that impressed with Suse10 hence Kubuntu. I do think my issue, personally, is my amd64 and ATI combination, but this is the first game I have had issues like this. It seems very heavy duty and uses hardware to its best advantage, and my system might look more like some Alien computer to it. But I chose Linux, SL is in Alpha, cannot expect to much yet, I think it is doing well considering its in Alpha, and this forum shows a pretty big following, and even bigger interest. It will work on my system eventually, I feel confident of that. |

The x86_64 kernel loads 32 bit modules (like the 3D driver) just fine. An 32 bit application will only load 32 bit libraries, so they must be installed in a path suitable for the application. The overall system still runs in 64 bit, only the client runs in 32 bit.
On SuSE 10.2 you should be able to just run it. _____________________

It's all about 32 bit emulation.
12-12-2006 23:00
IMHO, the problem is with getting a proper 32 bit emulation working in your distribution rather than a real issue with SL and amd64.
I run Gentoo on two amd64 machines, one uses an NVIDIA Geforce4 mx 4000 and the other uses an ATI 9000 and with both, SL works fine on both. I did however, install the 32 bit emulation libraries (app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-baselibs) long before I discovered SL. Historically, we've needed the 32 bit libraries to run things like the Flash plugin and wine so this should be a "solved problem" for any major distro. My recommendation would be to search your distro's documentation and forums for terms like "libuuid" and "32 bit emulation". Here's one solution for a 32 bit libuuid on Ubuntu... http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=203459&highlight=libuuid.so If your distribution doesn't properly support 32 bit emulation, I'd recommend looking for one that that does. I really like Gentoo, which does, but I'm not sure it's a good distro for people who are new to Linux. --Row |

Debian apparently still doesn't do multilib very well. Debian x86_64 users are pretty much SOL.

32bit nvidia GL libs?
12-13-2006 18:44
I've got SL running under AMD64, with all the required 32bit libs installed. Performance is pretty poor, my avatar is full of holes and other glitches.
I'd like to try the Nvidia GL libs, but the 64 bit ones are a non starter, and the 32 bit ones seem to segfault... anyone using NVidia opengl libs under amd64? |

I'm using the 32 bit compatibility drivers from nvidia.com on amd64 without any problems on a SuSE 10.0 system.

I'm running a Gentoo amd64 system with the NVidia 64-bit drivers and all the emul-linux packages. SL runs nice.

I've been running SL on Ubuntu amd64 without much problems.
The trick is to setup a chrooted 32-bit environment and install the libs there, then just make symbolic links in SecondLife's lib directory. ( See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=24575 ) I run firefox with the flash plugin in that way too (Adobe hasn't released a 64-bit version, AFAIK). _____________________

There should be two libs needed for x86_64: libuuid and libSDL, the 32 bit libraries can be put in /secondlife/lib and things should work properly. I'm on Ubuntu Edgy Eft otherwise unmodfied to run SL.

No promises, but a native 64-bit Linux client is probably one of the things I'll be looking into post-Beta.

libuuid.so.1
01-03-2007 20:12
where do we get 32bit libuuid.so.1 i've tried compiling it with 32bit options set.. but that doesnt seem to work. is there a way i can get a copy of this missing file? For me, on Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 AMD64, I did the following: 1. Downloaded the 32-bit .deb of this package from the packages.ubuntu.com site, in this case, the link is: http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/download.pl?arch=i386&file=pool%2Fmain%2Fe%2Fe2fsprogs%2Flibuuid1_1.39-1_i386.deb&md5sum=83d61e1ae9916166d33dae792273858e&arch=i386&type=main 2. Extracted the file 'libuuid.so.1.2' 3. sudo cp libuuid.so.1.2 /usr/lib32/ 4. sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libuuid.so.1.2 /usr/lib32/libuuid.so.1 5. sudo ldconfig ...This gets rid of it asking you for this library. My problem is it will run but will never connect... =p |

Hmmm.... with the installed library and Ubuntu 6.10 amd64 it works wonderfully on my system.
Okay... maybe it indeed IS a "bit" slow, yes, but it works. ![]() |

Assuming you're running SL 1.14.x, you shouldn't need to install libuuid or libSDL yourself. Do you find that you do? |
