Running a GeForce FX5200 and nvidia drivers on a Kubuntu 8.04 on a Pentium 4 HP with max memory..

When I run the 18 client, I get good performance, good graphics, low lag, but it does crash on loading often, and sometimes locks up later on.

I've tried the 19, 20 and 21 releases - all of them inform me that my system does not meet minimum system requirements and only run acceptably at the lowest graphics settings. I *can* ran at the higher settings, but it gets bogged down heavily.

Are there configuration issues I need to attend to? I've considered upgrading my video card but am unsure which card I should opt for.

Any help appreciated.

Should I presume that this is a developers only forum?

The 5200 is a pretty low end card.

What are your graphics settings?

What kind of bogging down are you having?

What FPS do you get?

Thank you for the reply.

So I am discovering. I'd forgotten how long ago I put this system in service.

In the 1.20 SL client, anything above MIN settings causes screen updates in about 1 second increments.

My system:
Card type: AGP arch. but it's a PCI board
Video Card: GeForce FX 5200; 128MB video memory
AGP rate: 8x
Fast Writes Disabled (supported), SBA Enabled
video bios 04.34.20.16.00
Driver: NVIDIA GeForce FX generic (it's the propietary/closed source drivers, NOT the default ubuntu driver)
X-Server: X.org
1280X1024 Pixel (514 x 418 mm)
Resolution 63 x 62 dpi
Depths(7) 24,1,4,8,15,16,32
Main Processor: Pentium 4 Dual Core hyper-threading 3.20GHz
Motherboard is an HP-proprietary (HP Pavilion a475c)

Not sure what you mean.. Frames Per Second? I presume that is available in a client run-log?
Running glxgears I get around 3400 frames in 5 seconds - around 685 FPS if that's what you mean.

Control Shift 1 shows the stats window.

To cut to the chase, for decent performance with SL today, you should get a better card than the 5200.

Your specs confuse me, do you have an AGP slot?

I agree - the video card is going to get replaced.

Using Ctrl-Shft-1 I get around 14.8 fps at min. settings - 4.7 at mid. and 1.6 at high in the 1.20 client.

Haven't cracked open the box yet - but the bios and linux system status tools tells me that the card is an AGP card, but it's bridged to a PCI connection. Not sure what that means myself, and I don't have time to open the box to look at the physical card yet today. Later today I *will* open it up and check.

UPDATE: Just opened the box - it's an AGP card in an AGP slot. I presume the motherboard bios translates the connection to PCI to simplify internal logic. At least that would explain what Linux sees, anyway. Also, the motherboard is P4SD-LA

Again, thanks for the response, and particularly the info about the Ctrl-Shft-1 key-cord - I presume that's documented somewhere, but I missed it. Sorry about that.

Some line feed carriage returns must have gotten lost somewhere.

AGP is old fashioned these days, making the choices not as plentiful as one would like, but they do exist.

the oldfashioned pc (amd64 socket 939, 1gb ram, AGP) I run SL on has a nvdia 6200, 256mb ram. This performs ok for just hanging around in SL with some (not too many) friends in a region with not too many textures and buildings.
I had for a short time a nvidia 7600GT AGP 512MB card, which almost doubled the framerate even with high graphic settings on. Really cool thingy, but bad luck the one I got had defective ram so that I returned it to the vendor. I decided for money back because I considered upgrading main memory to 2GB and the CPU to a dual core. Buying new PCI-Express hardware including mainboard then is cheaper than upgrading same things for the existing mainboard (180euro vs 200euro in germany; don't know for now, sometimes we have taxes in the EU for non-european hardware).

hope that helps
