I'm using Linux Ubuntu 8.04.
I want to improve my viewer performances - SL runs smoothly here, but if I push all graphic details at maximum, framerate gets too low.
I have 4 GB RAM, running at 800 Mhz in "dual channel interleaved" mode - I recently installed the 2.6.24-19-server kernel and now the system sees correctly all 4 gigabytes (my system is 32-bit and by default it sees only 3~ gigabytes)
My video card is a Nvidia 7300 GT.
I'm going to buy a new Nvidia card, 8xxx or 9xxx series. Suggestions about specific models? Which is your experience?
Should I also buy a new CPU? Right now, I have a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13GHz
My motherboard is an Asus P5B SE. I have a pretty fast hard disk (Raptor 74GB, 10k rpm).
note: I usually don't overclock my hardware

I'm assuming you have a PCI-Express graphics card for that 7 series NVidia, and it's a low-end 7 series at that (7300).
SL is heavy on the graphics, so I'd push it to a middle-end 8- or 9-series (8600/9600 or about that). If you dual-boot and play Crysis, you'll want to edge to the high end.

From: Opensource Obscure Suggestions about specific models? Which is your experience? It's rumoured it takes at least a Windows-configuration of the latest hardware, preferably quad-core processing and quad SLI-connected Nvidia-cards to make one succesful teleport and still obtain maximum framerate at maximum settings. And a lotta money. You have to be a capitalist beyond marxistic belief to fully enjoy it to full maxima, I suppose. You might also try offering a black chicken to any pagan god, Steve Ballmer or Steve Jobs or Philip Rosdale. Or just lie to your friend(s) and keep telling how 'great' SL is and 'anyone with any configuration can do it'. You could try playing a ukelele too. You make as much sense as I do. In any case .. buy something expensive you cannot control SL with and fail like us normal people.

At the end, I bought a new graphic card for 145 €: Nvidia-based Zotac 9600 GT 512mb This brings my system's cost (monitor not included) to ~650 €. I didn't change the CPU yet (AFAIK, quad-core aren't worthwhile if you only run Second Life and a web browser). At a first glance, the framerate is currently double than before at maximum graphic settings (antialiasing=2x, anisotroping filter=ON, water reflections enabled, 1600x1200 resolution). Also, apparently now I can shoot good-quality video (while before they were pretty chopped and I had to use lower graphic settings): http://blip.tv/file/1365275 (using SpaceNavigator)
