I noticed some slow down in the performance of my SL client, I am not sure if XGL might be causing it, do anybody have SL and XGL running at the same time?

I noticed some slow down in the performance of my SL client, I am not sure if XGL might be causing it, do anybody have SL and XGL running at the same time? May depend on your hardware. Recent graphics cards and processors should handle it just fine, older cards perhaps not. Athlon 4400+ SLi GeForce 7900's seems to run at the same speed. Might also depend on what revision drivers you are using as well as kernel + Xorg etc. |

I tried it on a computer with an NVidia FX 5200 / Duron 1800 MHz, and X used half the CPU for itself. So SL was slow
![]() There was a warning, however, that XGL might not work with my Graphic Hardware at all though, so it was probably that - my graphic card was too weak. And I did have other issues too, which definitely looked like my graphic hardware (FX 5200) was not up to it. I did not get my usual 5.2 FPS on this computer ![]() _____________________

My setup is AGP ATI 9600XT, 1gb RAM memory and 1.5Ghz speed.
Actually XGL itself runs ok, but Secondlife runs terribly slow. I noticed there was a release of new Ati driver 6 days ago I will install and check to see if it is not some incompatibility between SL and Video driver. I do not want to turn Xgl off =( Merric, the configuration you just sent probably would run 4 SL without feeling any slowdown, I do not have a bad computer but it is not top computer too. A few weeks ago SL did run fairly well (but that was a version ago, and some stuff drivers and programs have been updated since then) I will post any discoveries _____________________

I would not run XGL and SL together unless you have a powerhouse video card.
What do I do? Run two instances of X. One with XGL and all sorts of other eye candy enabled, and one with it totally disabled, just a bare Xorg server with GLX enabled. |

That is something I do not know how to do, how do I do that ?
Is there a way to create another login without compiz or I will have to uninstall it first? (running two X instances can be found here:http://forums.vr-zone.com/archive/index.php/t-65845.html) Now turning Xgl off... it should be a button other than Compiz manager to turn it off (compiz manager actually turns halfway off only some parts of it) _____________________

Given XGL is mostly beta software, that doesn't surprise me. I tested it out on my laptop a bit and it nearly gave it a heart attack every so often.
![]() But really, performace hits should depend on the type of card you have and how XGL is installed (what distro?). I'd be tempted to try it myself if it worked with Fluxbox. I'm not switching WMs for it, though. ![]() (And you can run a second version of Xorg either from a different pure console -- Ctrl-Alt-F# -- or by running it as a child process of another X session. For example, if you're already running X without Xgl, it'll show up in a child window when you run Xgl's init script) _____________________

I will have to test if it is possible to run two Xorg on my computer, since one is running XGL already I do not think a second X without XGL would do any difference. Distro is Ububtu Dapper 6.06, more specs you can find within my sig
(currently digging this post https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/Xgl) _____________________

I've been able to run it with out major issue on Ubuntu Edgy Eft which is currently alpha with the most recent code base for XGL and Xorg. Since XGL runs on GL hardware the most recent drivers will be needed. SL does not often get along and share graphics hardware very well but it should work at rates similar to nonXGL configurations.
My basis for this is in XFCE, not gnome. Gnome is not yet compete in it's XGL support so may run into issues, I am as well unsure of KDE's support. Problems may arise with different drivers, xorg, window managers or other apps which use openGL along with the hardware used. Running alpha software on top of alpha software is unpredictable and often not to useful for development teams. It may be best to find the root problem by running on solid software as the problem may be in XGL and not SL, who knows at this point. |

I just fixed the main problem, I made some tests, ran Xgl on another X, Sl without XGL and SL with Xgl and the performance difference was little.
What made the big difference is that when I updated the latest SL version, the option Video Memory was set to 128mb while my video card supports 256mb, switching it to 256mb boosted the game speed up to 100%. Result: I run SL with XGL with no slowdown. _____________________

Yeah, I have a successful run of SL with all the bells and whistles it is currently programmed with.
XFCE supports XGL/compiz server and extensions fully for transparency and all the neat effects that Mac OS X and Windows Vista have and will have. It will take better hardware as anyone could guess but it makes no difference on the Athlon64 X2 4400+/2gbDDR2/SLi Geforce 7900GT system I have. Works great for game play and doesn't stop me from doing anything else while I am in SL. There is a segmentation fault at shutdown though. This might be Ubuntu Knot (6.10alpha) causing this though. It is only at the tail end of shutdown but results in the next run noticing that SL crashed previously. |

Update: With this new version of SL (AGP/video settings), it is way better performancewise to disable Xgl/Compiz.
Mine for some reason disables Directrendering when I turn Xgl on. _____________________
