9 out of 10 times while trying to connect, I get stuck either at "Decoding images" or "Connecting to region..". As my friends have no problems logging in, I'm suspecting the linux client being the culprit. I've had no similar issues with my Windows client.
Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

This is what i use to see in the bad old days of my fmod crashing. It always occurred at this point. Do you get lots of random crashes later if you do manage to get in world?
Try disabling sound (enable all LL_BAD_ESD,LL_BAD_ALSA,LL_BAD_ESD lines in the secondlife shell script and give it another go.
Also there are some other disable options in the start script you can turn on.
Its also possible that you have a bad/stuck texture, try clearing the cache (or even deleting ~/.secondlife
Also what messages do you see if you start the viewer from a terminal window? It may give more of a clue to the issue at hand.
