Ok so i just reinstalled a fresh copy of Karmic 9.10 and my mic is completely dead in SL. I can hear inworld sounds but does anyone know how to get the new sound drivers to work? Removing pulseaudio seems to crash the entire sound system. On 9.04 it worked with installing esound and alsa, but doesnt seem to on 9.10

Ubuntu 32-bit or 64-bit?

Have you set the correct mixer device in your system sound preferences?

Have you set all devices under System --> Preferences --> Sound to "PulseAudio Sound Server"?

Have you checked mixer settings in the volume control?

Does your mic work in other applications?

Do you have "Default" or "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA)" set in your viewer voice settings for both input and output?

Do you hear anyone else in voice?

Do you have a white dot over your head?

Does anyone else show up in your list of users using voice in the viewer?

I have no luck with any sound in SL whatsoever using a GA-MA785GM-US2H - I have sound in Firefox or other applications but SL or apps like Counterstrike in Wine have no sound or crackling and then dying, respectively. My mic shows the input level changing when I speak into it until I try to use something like Sound Recorder and then mic stops working.

Probably more an issue of the motherboard, not SL, but I just thought I'd share that with you. One thing suggested to me was to install linux-backports-modules-karmic-alsa-generic. I did that but haven't had any improvement.

Version SecondLife-i686-1.23.5.136262 (beta) does support voice and supposedly music streams. Music doesn't stream for me yet under 64 bit Karmic Ubuntu. (impatiently waiting for 64bit native SL)

If your sound doesn't work well with other applications, yes, you are probably best off to post on the Ubuntu forums for solutions.

It seems quite a few things got broken again in Karmic which worked In Jaunty.
Like my sound, my Graphics pad and Firefox which freezes very often.
As for sound, I had to completely purge Pulse Audio to get sound working.
After installing all the Gstreamer gear and esound, I can't get SL sound to work either, or video. I've given up on it.
I now consider Koala, a Beta version of Lama. I wish I never installed it.
Seems to me now that x.04 versions are the stable ones, x.10 versions are test versions for the next x.04.
The next 10.04 will be a LTS, long term support version. I'm gonna just stay with that.

Agreed, for the most part. Intrepid (8.10) worked well for me, but Gutsy (7.10) seriously sucked for me. It seems the releases right before a LTS release are the worst for reliability.
