I'm using Debian unstable, ATI Radeon RV200 LX [Mobility FireGL 7800 M7], X.org version: 6.9.0, stock Xorg drivers,
I can launch the Second Life client exactly once, when I have no settings.ini file.
It creates a window, and then dies: 2006-03-24T22:32:28Z INFO: Loaded OpenGL symbol 'glXGetProcAddressARB'. 2006-03-24T22:32:28Z INFO: Couldn't initialize mipmap generation 2006-03-24T22:32:28Z INFO: Couldn't initialize GL_EXT_paletted_texture 2006-03-24T22:32:28Z INFO: Couldn't initialize GL_NV_vertex_array_range 2006-03-24T22:32:28Z INFO: Couldn't initialize GL_NV_fence 2006-03-24T22:32:28Z INFO: Couldn't initialize separate specular color 2006-03-24T22:32:28Z INFO: Couldn't initialize anisotropic filtering Mesa 6.4.1 implementation error: User called no-op dispatch function (an unsupported extension function?) Please report at bugzilla.freedesktop.org 2006-03-24T22:32:28Z INFO: remove_marker_file()
Howeve,r when I remove settings.ini, it continues past this point with default preferences.
Help?

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but have you installed ATI's graphics drivers (you say "stock Xorg drivers", but I'm not sure if you meant graphics drivers)? It looks like you're using Mesa for OpenGL, which is software-level OpenGL and won't cut it...
Your package manager should have the ATI drivers available in it somewhere. Look for fglrx, ati-driver, or ati-kernel... something like that. Some Debian user will tell us the package name, I'm sure...

What suprised me is that it works the first time, but not the second.

Hmm... I have no idea. There used to be an open-source ATI effort. Was it called Gatos, maybe? I don't know, it's been a while since I needed that information...

Seems a very weird bug. I guess there is some setting in the .ini file that is activating some non-supported gfx feature. If you just want it to work, you could just write a bash script that removes the ini file each time before starting SL. On the other hand, you could go comment out all the options in the ini file, comment them in one by one and find the one that stops the program from working. That might help with fixing the bug (if there is one).

Try removing the RenderAnisotropic option (or setting it to FALSE) in the settings.ini file. Maybe your card does not support it.

SL is a 3D game, therefore you need 3D drivers. I don't know if there are any for the mobility but I was never able to find any for my laptop.
