I'm trying to get Release 1_20_15_92456 with the Cool add-ons working smoothly at anything above minimal settings. Any suggestions on video card?
Also, should I install the latest Nvidia Linux driver (173.14.12)?

The answer here without further information is usually: The best you can afford with the latest drivers.
I have NV6150Go (512Mb) in my laptop. Min settings with shiny and high terrain textures is the best I get before slowing.
Do some searching and check that Nvidia have had problems with their 9000 series cards. ATI are an option these days. I've never had one.

I phrased my question poorly - though with Linux there appears to be only two viable alternatives - NVIDIA and ATI... and ATI doesn't fare well in the general Linux community. I guess that's why I presumed it would be an NVIDIA board..
I'd read a sticky linux client README quite a while ago; I'd forgotten it mentioned a list of recommended boards (which, btw are mostly NVIDIA) Actually the README I read might have pre-dated the one on the board now.
I guess I was more interested in boards and drivers to avoid.
Thanks for the response.

The story about ATI drivers being unusable in Linux hasn't been true for at least a year or so. See Phoronix.com for details about this and other linux driver issues.
I have Dell E1505 laptop with a Mobility Radeon X1400 and Second Life runs and looks great on it in Linux. (So does Open Arena, I don't play any other games.)
You might get a better response if you provide more detail about your system, like the bus (agp or pci), cpu speed, motherboard, power supply. etc.
Also, if it's an older system you might be better off upgrading everything instead of just replacing the video card.

My system: Motherboard is in an HP Pavilion a475c - Asus P4SD-LA; HP codename Stingray video card type: AGP arch. but it's a PCI board - UPDATE - Actually an AGP card - apparently it's internally translated to a PCI card... Video Card: GeForce FX 5200; 128MB video memory AGP rate: 8x Fast Writes Disabled (supported), SBA Enabled video bios 04.34.20.16.00 Driver: NVIDIA GeForce FX generic (it's the propietary/closed source drivers, NOT the default ubuntu driver) X-Server: X.org 1280X1024 Pixel (514 x 418 mm) Resolution 63 x 62 dpi Depths(7) 24,1,4,8,15,16,32 Main Processor: Pentium 4 Dual Core hyper-threading 3.20GHz, 512MB main memory (I thought it was more; go figure..)
glxgears reports 685 FPS.
I can play OpenArena quite readily myself. I am also able to play Quake III Arena as a Linux app as well. Also, Medal of Honor (Linux port) plays well.
As I say, the 1.18 linux client gives me ground textures, shiny objects and very good response.
